Joaquin Phoenix, star of such films as Gladiator and Walk the Line, has officially finalized his deal to star as Batman's arch-nemesis, Joker in an upcoming solo film. The film, written and directed by Todd Phillips, will be, according to the studio, " an exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”
The film will start shooting this September in New York, with an official release date not yet set. With a production budget of $55m, it is seen as a more experimental and gritty take on the character, more akin to a crime drama, and not a full-fledged action blockbuster.
WB should reveal more on this, including whether or not, the Jared Leto Joker movie is still in the works. Leto played the Clown Prince of Crime in 2016's blockbuster, Suicide Squad.
