Cool new chapter
"Excuse me. You ever danced with the devil by the pale moonlight?"

chapter 14

"two hundred channels and not a damn thing on," selina said, annoyed as she flipped through the channels on wayne manor's large screen television in the living room.

she was more bored than anything. bruce was in the batcave, with strict instructions not to be bothered as he worked, leaving her to find a way to entertain herself alone on this cold november afternoon. it was proving to be a futile task. there was no reading material that interested her. she had little interest in her past artistic hobbies such as watercolor and sketching. she could have gone outside into the snow that had been falling all day, but without anyone to throw a snowball at or anyone to build a snowman with, that too was a loser.

finally resigned to the fact that nothing on the television was going to engross her for more than two or three seconds tops, selina turned it off and decided to sprawl out and have a nap. she hadn't had her eyes closed more than fifteen, perhaps twenty seconds when the front doorbell, which sounded like bells at a large clock tower going off and was even a little unsettling to people who knew it was about to sound, bellowed.

"damnit. damnit, damnit, damnit," selina grumbled as she walked to the door. she opened it...and promptly recieved a snowball right in the center of her chest.

"what the hell?!" she cried, looking at the cold, wet spot on her shirt. just then, a late-fall breeze passed over her, chilling her to the bone. she was about ready to cry when she looked up to see dick grayson, back from his halloween trip, arms raised in the air. "you weren't supposed to answer it!" he shouted. "well what did you want me to do? just let it ring?" she shot back, scowling. "no no no," dick said. "someone ELSE was supposed to answer." "well no one ELSE is here, jackass!" she screamed at him. then she glared for a moment before slamming the door shut, leaving dick outside in the snow and returning to the couch to try to continue her nap.

a short time later, as selina lay, still unable to doze off, dick walked into the living room and plopped down on the end of the couch. then, without looking at her, he lifted her feet up, placed them onto his lap, and began massaging them. selina, bewildered at first, watched him for a moment, her chagrin slowly building.

"what. the. hell?"

"what, you don't like getting your feet rubbed?" he asked as he slid his fingers between each of her toes. "no, i like it just fine," she said, sitting up. dick studied her annoyed gaze. "you just don't like me, right?" he somberly replied. "i wouldn't say that," she said. "i would just say you're the typical guy." "what is that supposed to mean?" he asked, stopping the massage. "oh nothing more than the simple, well known fact that men were born with two heads and only enough blood to work one at the time."

dick burst into laughter at selina's rather crude remark. she giggled in spite of herself. then she looked towards the stairs. bruce stood at the bottom, watching them. "am i interrupting?" he called. "um, no, not at all," selina said. "dicky here was just leaving." "hey wait a min-" dick tried to protest. "beat it, hopalong!" she glared. dick, genuinely hurt, stood up and started to limp away. as he moved past her, selina tugged on the sleeve of his sweater. she flashed him a wink when he looked down. then she gave him a good natured push on his way.

with dick gone, she turned. bruce now stood at the end of the couch. "what was that all about?" he asked. "oh, nothing. he just wanted to give me a foot massage." "must have been a hell of a massage," bruce replied, referencing their laughter. selina giggled again. "i'll tell you later, mm'k?" "good, because we need to talk now." "uh oh," selina said, remembering the last time bruce had said "we need to talk." she stood up and followed him up to the stairs to his bedroom.

once there, they again sat together on bruce's bed.

"selina, i've been thinking a lot lately." "about what?" "well, frankly, us." selina searched his face for some bit of expression that might have told her what was going on inside his head. there was none. "well what do you mean?" she finally asked.

"selina..." he looked into her eyes and reached for her. she was stunned at first as he swept her into his embrace, kissing her passionately. after a moment she embraced him back. she was so immersed in the kiss that she barely noticed as bruce's hands moved around to the front of her body and undid her blouse. she pulled away and looked down as his hand cupped her breasts before pulling away her bra. she reached for his shirt and pulled it up over his head. then she leapt onto him.

a short time later, they lay beside one another. the passionate love making that selina and bruce had both run through their minds in the past but resigned themselves to the fact that it probably would never happen had worn them out both physically and emotionally. now they just lay together, the electricity of what had just taken place still coursing through them. selina's head was propped on bruce's arm and pulled snuggly against him. with his other arm, he was changing the television channels, hoping to find something light and heartwarming to fit their mood.

he stopped on the gotham city news network. selina hissed at the image of chip shreck as bruce read the words below the image. he bolted upright. "holy sh*t!" he screamed, fidding with the remote to try to turn up the volume. selina, unable to read what was on the screen reached for her glasses and pulled them on. her eyes widened. she gasped and placed her hand over her mouth as bruce finally got the sound up to a volume they could hear clearly.

"once again, we have breaking news," the female newscaster said. "chip shreck has been killed in an apparent bombing at his apartment earlier this evening. we will have more details as we get them on this stunning, tragic case."

bruce and selina turned to one another, each wearing the same look of shock and horror.

Noiccce.

More. more......moooooooooooreeeeee

chapter 15

black smoke billowed from a gaping hole in the top floor of one of gotham's most expensive apartment buildings.

hours earlier, it had been the location of chip shreck's apartment. now it was apparently the location of a terrorist attack, although red claw had yet to claim responsibility as forensic scientists scoured the building and the adjacent apartment which had been damaged in the blast. fortunately its occupant hadn't been home at the time. outside the building's doors, a large crowd was building, which impeded the progress of the authorities.

"damn!" one man in the crowd shouted randomly. "i can't believe it," a woman sobbed. many others stood arm in arm, crying, mourning the loss of the man expected to be the driving force behind gotham city as it entered the new century. some even held photos of chip to their hearts while crowding together in order to stay warm in the light snowfall.

as the crowd continued to grow, inside the building, commisioner gordon looked over the ruins of chip's apartment. the blast had pretty much wiped out the front room while the subsequent fire had damaged the bedroom. the burnt smell of the room was so overwhelming that few men could stay in there for more than a moment or two at the time. "what a shame," gordon said in spite of his distaste towards chip and the shreck family in general. he had always been good friends with bruce wayne and, before that, thomas wayne. still, he was a good man at heart and investigating a murder scene, especially one as destructive as this, was the part of the job that had him growing more and more ready to retire.

"i should have been able to stop this," gordon heard a voice say from behind. startled, he spun around, his flashlight beam stopping on batman. "and just how exactly could you have stopped it?" gordon asked. batman sighed and walked over to the charred remains of chip's couch. he leaned against it. "it should have been painfully obvious after red claw murdered his fiancee that shreck was a target. we should have ordered him out of the city, or at the very least, i should have protected him."

"well instead of talking about what we should have done," gordon said, "lets talk about what we're going to do. do you think she's done in gotham?" "unlikely," batman replied. "i believe the 'rich and famous' of gotham city are all in danger until we pinpoint her motives for killing these two." "well how do we do that?" batman pondered for a moment. "i'm not sure. put your men on high alert. i suggest increased security at all of the traditional haunts of the wealthy."

"alright. i'll see about bringing in the national guard as well," gordon said. batman did not reply. he simply stared at the ground, unmoving. "are you okay, friend?" gordon asked. batman looked up at him. without a word he walked past him and using his grappling gun, swooped from the window.

back at wayne manor, selina sat alone in her bedroom. her eyes were glued to the television report of chip's death, but she was so lost in her mixed emotions that none of the information she was seeing and hearing entered her mind. she wasn't sure whether to feel glee, horror, sadness, or guilt over what had happened. she had truly hated him, but unlike her father, for whom her hate outweighed any other emotion, the compassionate humanitarian within selina made it hard to smile at the fact that chip had been apparently blown to bits, likely by a terrorist whom she had watched mercilessly kill his fiancee and two other women just days earlier.

a knock at the door broke selina from her inner struggle of emotions, at least momentarily, but without startling her as usual. "come in," she called, turning off the tv. the door opened and bruce, having returned and removed his batsuit, stepped in. "well?" she asked him. bruce sat down, saying nothing for a moment. then he turned to her. "selina, as my girlfriend, i would say that there is a good chance that you're a target, same as chip's fiancee."

"well what am i supposed to do?" she asked. "i can't leave the city and leave you by yourself." "i know that, but no one has to know you're here. we can say that you've left and hide you here, but you cannot go out in the open under any circumstances." selina looked at him. "don't you mean, under any circumstances EXCEPT when i'm wearing this?" she held up her catwoman mask.

"exactly," bruce said, the corner of his mouth barely curling into a smile.
