Is anyone else surprised they shot this with a green screen back drop?  I know I am!  I mean, do you all remember in movies when they would just go ahead, land a helicopter and shoot the actors exiting it?  I know I do.  But no, Nolan had to shoot this on a sound stage, so he could use his penthouse suite set.  Good Lord, no wonder this thing cost, what, $180 million dollars?  What is even worse, I could see the insurance company telling the production company they wouldn't insure the movie, unless it was shot this way.  I can hear it now, "Nope, we can't back you on this one Mr. Nolan.  What if the helicopter encountered some turbulence and it crashed.  Better find a safer way to do it."

I doubt it had anything to do with the insurance company. I imagine something as simple as a helicopter landing on a penthouse might actually be pretty tough to orchestrate. Sometimes the green screen is just easier.

Although I do agree that Hollywood has a tendency to overdo things with SFX. Superman Returns in particular had way too many CGI shots of Superman, and some of them were pretty obvious.

Yeah, I can see why all the talk of a complete reboot after seeing that ... piece of work.

This is an awesome collection of less seen stills. Thanks a lot for the link

I'm not surprised. I knew a long way back.

The penthouse set was just that, a set. The skyline wasn't there. It was just a green screen background where the windows were.

The buildings and sky were added in afterward.

I believe they said they used a lobby for the penthouse fundraiser scene, which is why they had to use green screens on the outside.
Why is there always someone who bring eggs and tomatoes to a speech?

Not sure I see the problem with it being green screened.  These sorts of things are usually determined by what's cheapest and fastest.  In this case, I can see a green screen and a couple of wind machines facilitating the wind from the propellers being a lot easier and cheaper to organize than landing a real helicopter and going through all those logistics.  Filmmaking is a race against time, as much as anything.  Why not do what's easiest and cheapest (particularly for throwaway shots like that)?
