WBD wants to shelve Coyote vs Acme

The news came out a week ago.

Assuming they haven't destroyed the film already, Coyote vs Acme will be the third film shelved for tax write-offs by WBD, after Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt. This is yet another terrible look for the studio and gives suspicion they were acting out of bad faith.

The most baffling thing out of all this is James Gunn co-wrote AND co-produced Coyote vs Acme.

Despite this, Gunn has NOT said anything publicly about the situation. This leads me to believe in two possibilities:

1) This whole ordeal is a cynical PR marketing campaign to hype up a supposedly great film, and an announcement to sell the film to another studio will be announced by the next earnings call in a week from now;

2) Gunn doesn't care if the Looney Tunes project he contributed is in danger of getting erased, because he's too busy hijacking the DC brand to line up his own pockets.

If this film is truly doomed and not even someone like Gunn's current standing in the industry can save it, then who is to say this DCU won't be dead on arrival? If I were Gunn, I'd do everything I could and call the studio out for destroying a film I worked on, instead of spin-doctoring every time there's bad PR affecting his DCU agenda.

Whatever the case is, this is yet another black mark on WBD's already tainted reputation. Directors, writers, actors and consumers need to start taking a stance against this shoddy corporate misconduct, because other studios are beginning to copy. Netflix shelved a sci-fi film starring Halle Berry a few weeks ago. This can't go on.

While Gunn is staying silent and trying to get everyone's attention by promoting his Superman bullsh*t, actors have been expressing their support for Coyote vs Acme. The latest is Will Forte, who stands by the film and laments the whole situation.

As it's stated in the title, the film is about Wile E. Coyote taking Acme to court for the distress their faulty products have caused him over the years. Many are speculating the story about an underdog taking on a powerful, corrupt organisation rubbed David Zaslav and other execs the wrong way, and that's why they seem determined to bury the film.

Others stated Zaslav's track record of cutting down and shelving animated projects claim he has contempt for the whole medium. I'd believe that, but he's allowing an alleged R-rated Creature Commandoes show (a dumb idea made even worse if you ask me) to be the start of this ridiculous DCU agenda so that theory doesn't quite convince me.

Whatever it is, it's not the only film that has potentially been shelved. Stephen King has called WBD out for not releasing another film based on one of his novels.

If WBD has written these films off then I repeat, people in Hollywood really need to start holding them accountable, and make more of an effort than they did back in November when Coyote vs Acme was initially cancelled. Why the hell would anyone want to make something for that studio when the risk of seeing your work getting shelved grows as time goes by? The place is terrible for creativity, and even worse for making content for IPs.

I can hear the case for a live action DC movie losing money and damaging the brand. But I doubt that's the case for these cartoons. The only way this would avert a disaster is if it were another Velma, which does not seem to be the case.

The screenwriter for Coyote vs Acme said the ongoing talks on whether or not to shop the film to another studio is still ongoing, though admitted everyone involved with the film is heartbroken about the situation.

Even if this film does get released, it won't repair WBD's bad reputation. It's times like these that made me appreciate that ZSJL got released when it did, because it certainly wouldn't have come out today.

I can hear the case for a live action DC movie losing money and damaging the brand. But I doubt that's the case for these cartoons. The only way this would avert a disaster is if it were another Velma, which does not seem to be the case.

I don't think the whole "protect the DC brand" excuse holds any water after all the flops they've had over the past year. And if they were serious about animation, Velma would not have been renewed for another season.

While the odious James Gunn continues to promote himself, he was screenshotted taking a dump on the whole #ReleaseCoyoteVsACME movement.



He seems he couldn't care less, but I bet if this film were to come out he'd certainly take credit for it.
