Great interview with Carl Newman, the guy who developed the body language of the Bat!

He has a social media presence: Balletbat 1989

I have interacted with and thanked him. He seems like a really sweet natured guy.

Just to follow up on this:

It is a great interview and Mr. Newman discusses this scene:

This still is a part of a cut shot that was replaced by the animated Batman who overlooks the scene of attack on the family from beginning of the film. The idea of course was that one of these gargoyles is not like the other and--OMG it moved!

I listened to the interview and that was my first time hearing that they actually shot this scene. Obviously they cut it for a reason, but I'd just like to know why. I'm one of the few that never had a problem with the animated Batman on top of the cathedral, but the idea for this in the script sounded pretty cool.

I was surprised at how much of the performance wasn't Keaton. It sounds like Keaton was mainly used for close-ups and dialogue scenes. That's an interesting way to go about it. The other Batman films use stunt doubles in the Batsuit, but idk if any of them also had a movement coach.

The animated Batman has always been there since my viewings as a youngster, so it's something that I never questioned or thought to be out place. Looking back as an adult I think the scene works better the way its handled. After a tease, Batman's full reveal is something we build up to. The animation has Batman glimpsed from a distance and gives him an otherworldly feel, like a shadow merging into the night.

Kind of suprised that shot never made it into any of the trailers.

Late reply, but I wanted to say that I agree. The still is cool, but it gives away too much too soon. It deadens the impact of the first reveal shot which is incredible.
