Releasing the Snyder cut was impossible... right up until the minute it became possible, that is. And then, it was possible all of a sudden.

It looks like the idea here is "Let's make money off the stuff we can make money off of". Under that rubric, I have to assume that an Ayer cut of Suicide Squad is totally possible. I'd be interested in seeing it for comparison, if nothing else.
I'm all for it. Ayer's cut would be radically different and well worth seeing. Leto's Joker has been tarred and feathered as a disgrace, and he's had to wear that reputation ever since. Unfairly, in my view. He probably still wouldn't be the fan favorite, but you'd have to imagine his standing would increase greatly.

Grace Randolph, who said a SnyderLeague release was going to happen, is now tweeting a Cavill contract announcement is in the endgame, and we could hear something as early as next week. If Gal Gadot can continue Wonder Woman films, why the hell can't Henry Cavill suit up for sequels as well? I'm feeling hopeful about it. The AT&T/HBO influence could be the best thing to happen if they're forcing these issues.

Things seem to have changed, in any case.

I think it's unfair as well. Do you think people would've reacted positively to Heath Ledger's Joker if he was only in a film for 5 minutes?

More tweets from David Ayer:

Quote
This [referring to the scene where Leto's Joker is about to torture Dr. Harleen Quinzel] was reshot because the tone was "too dark" - My first act was a normally constructed film. I took my inspiration from Nolan. There were real scenes with incredible acting between Jared and Margot. Joker was terrifying. Harley was complex.

Imagine if Todd Phillips film The Joker was reshot and recut because it was too dark — This is EXACTLY what happened to Suicide Squad. Anyone who says my cut did not work owes me to say it directly to me.

He hasn't completely disowned the theatrical cut, however.

Theatrical did incredible business, introduced new characters to the fans and was a fun Summer movie. It was an incredible journey for which I am eternally grateful

Nonetheless, we all need to see what he really intended for Suicide Squad.

I've read some of his comments and I can't help wondering if he's not trying to be diplomatic so that he can stay on good terms with WB. He wants his movie out there and there's an entire politic that goes into advocating for what he wants while not stepping on somebody else's toes. It's not an easy balance to strike. But based on what's been reported, the reshoots impacted the movie far more than cutting some footage. I think he's trying to play the game carefully here. And let's face it, Ayer has been locked down for months the same as anybody else and it could be that he wants some work right now.

I'm looking forward to the Snyder Cut but I'd be even more excited for The Ayer Cut.
Snyder's cut interests me more. But the real Suicide Squad would be radically different experience, and I'd love to see it.

I think Ayer wants justice for his work above all else. That's what I read from his tweets. Ayer has had to wear a lot of negative smears, and he wants his name cleared. He hasn't trashed the studio, but he has broken cover to say embarrassing things about their conduct. Now is the time to do that, because the iron is hot. The Snyder cut sets a precedent for a director's cut, but Ayer is still starting his movement from the ground up.

Like a lot of artists, I think Ayer would rather be pilloried for his true vision than praised for his compromised, incomplete vision.

Inasmuch as he's gotten pilloried anyway I guess he's done the calculus and figured he's got nothing to lose from a release that at least presents the movie he intended to make. If he gets beat up on Twitter after his cut gets released, well, how's that different from any other day?

Definitely. Needing work now isn't the main goal. This is a long term mission if need be. As Ayer tweeted:

"I don't mind if my cut is seen in 5 years. I simply want the best version of my work represented. Zack deserves this wonderful wonderful opportunity he's been given by @hbomax and @ATT — It's all love."

Notice he mentions HBO Max and AT&T, but not WB.

Judging by Cathy Yan's tweet, it seems BOP was also affected by reshoots (no surprise!)

She has since been fighting with Grace Randolph over rumours surrounding BOP, but that has nothing to do with this topic. And quite frankly, I don't care either.

Jared Leto liked this tweet by a fan.

This is what David Ayer said in response.

Jared was pretty mistreated during this. No one has seen his performance. It was ripped out of the movie.

David Ayer went on Instagram and released a new image of Joker trying to break Harley out of jail.

This shot was NOT in the ending of the theatrical cut.

I'm guessing in Ayer's version, Harley refuses to escape with Joker and he reacts angrily.

A couple of weeks ago, Ayer released a few more unseen shots from his cut.

Here's one of Katana lashing out with Captain Boomerang in the background.

And here's another shot of Harley Quinn and Batman.
