Which Elfman Batman Soundtrack do you prefer?

Batman (1989)
Batman Returns

More for the soundtrack then the figures, I am at a loss for words! Though Elfman's soundtrack is pretty much just as appealing.

Hi folks - I run http://elfman.filmmusic.com, and like you all I've inquired about a possible re-issue of the BATMAN score with add'tl music, etc.  Unfortunately there is one major stumbling block, and that is the Warner Bros. Records album from 1989 is still very much in print.  Until it goes out of print there probably won't be an expanded edition.

Thanks for the info.

Call me crazy but doesn't that say something about the album's popularity?

I have been playing both Elfman Batman soundtracks all week.

After much consideration, I've reverted back to my selection at the beginning of this thread. The Batman Returns soundtrack does it for me.

I just dig the gloomy atmosphere it has. It doesn't just have gloom, it has a sleek, mysterious vibe. Elfman didn't lazily rest on his past laurels, he instead created an entirely new sound.

I do think it is a superior effort in that it's a much broader canvas and less reliant on The Batman Theme. I think less is more. The Batman Theme is instead saved up for great effect. And what an excellent theme to have up your sleeve.

The Batman '89 soundtrack is my favourite, but what an excellent follow-up with Batman Returns? Not many film scorers have that kind of track record, save for Williams, Horner, Zimmer and a few others.

The first soundtrack, especially if I can include the Prince songs.   ;)
Johnny Gobs got ripped and took a walk off a roof, alright? No big loss.

If I include the Prince songs with Elfman's soundtrack, that's something that puts me off it. I'm just not that fond of them. They strike me as dated, cheesy and a bit out of place. They're not a deal breaker, though.

I realise that the Prince songs are not to everyone's tastes, but I've always been a big fan of The Purple One, and the fact that his songs arguably date Batman doesn't concern me since I've always viewed the film as a commentary on the 80s, a period a hold a certain fondness for (as a was a child throughout it) despite its many understandably negative associations.

Even without the Prince songs I'd probably just about go with the first film's soundtrack simply because it was the first time we heard Elfman's iconic score.
