As a MEGA Batman fan, I have trouble going to other forums, mostly because the die hard Nolanites sort of ruin the fun of discussion with their blind obsession and arrogant attitude toward anything non-Nolan Batman.  This forum is awesome because its all about Batman of all its incarnations and fans on this forum seem to be appreciate all interpretations on the character !  Personally, I grew up with Burton films & the 1992 Bruce Timm animated series, which I love to this day.  Yes, I enjoyed Nolan series, but I don't believe its iconic or anything above a decent Batman series.  It's just great to post on a forum with people who wont jump down your throat when you mention the brilliance of the Burton Batman films.  It seems the adults seem to appreciate everything Batman where as the younger generation of teens are obsessed with Nolan's vision and are arrogant about anything else.

I'd like to think we're a bit more open-minded around here than another nameless Batman forum I shall not name so it shall remain nameless. Chris Nolan has his fans but you've got no shortage of appreciation for comic books, animated, Burton or whatever else.

I too share the same sentiment. I found out about this place around 2009 (thanks to Catwoman). Posted here and there but by that time i was sick of posting about batman due to the feuds between Burtonites and Nolanites. And by that I mean people who only accept one version or the other and trash every aspect of every other film. There's definitely Burtonites out there but the Nolanites were far greater in numbers as well as annoyance. While the Burtonites generally only trolled on the Batman boards, Nolanites have been trolling on the Batman, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Spider-man, Thor, Captain America, Superman, and Avengers boards. The sad thing is that other than the Batman boards, some of the fans on the other boards don't recognize those trolls only like the Nolan bat films and label them as "batman fans". I'm actually surprised not to see any Nolanites here, not sure if they get banned or what but it's nice because people can disagree here without resorting to childish namecalling or close mindedness.

To be honest I hate the dark knight rises (dark knight is awesome though) and am kind of glad I do.

With the arkham city game as well as the dark knight rises being released in the past year, I find myself posting here much more frequently. Great group of folks here and I have nothing but respect for the people who run this place.

I registered on here in 2008.  I have always been into what Tim burton's Batman 3 would look like with Riddler / Two Face, so I shared my work here.  I shared the same artwork on other sites, but the responses on this forum were positive.  I've been on SHH for a while just because I am also a fan of the other comic book characters naturally like most of us are (Superman, Avengers, X-Men, Star Wars, etc).  But I had enough of SHH with their rules and double standards.  When I posted my artwork on SHH, people always said "Glad Burton didnt do a third, would have been awful".  Well - NO...  LOL, it would have been interesting from my point of view.  Burton had such a great sense of psychology with his characters that it made an interesting story no matter what the plot is.  Batman Returns is amazing in my eyes.  The plot is Penguin running for mayor with the help of corrupt Shrek.  Its a basic simple plot that really doesnt sound appealing at all, but when you watch the movie, the characters are so rich and such depth, that it made a great movie.    But then Bruce Timm and Paul Dini really took Batman and kind of blended the burton dark vision along with the elements of the comic to create an absolute wonderful world of Batman.  I really can't decide which incarnation of Batman I enjoy more - Bruce Timm's Batman or Burtons.  Burtons is more artistic and wonderful, but its only 4-5 hours bc he only did two while Batman TAS went quite a few seasons to give us all the characters.

And believe it or not, I actually did enjoy Batman Forever!  I liked the movie.  I think I'm a bit biased though because I was a kid when it came out and I got all the toys and really got into all the merchandise sensation.  The Seal Kiss of  Rose song was playing in the movie theater everywhere, the Riddler was the next 'big' villain and Batman films were still new.  Looking at the film today, its a fun entertaining popcorn movie.  Yes, Jim Carrey is over the top and the movie is mis-cast and campy, but I enjoy the incarnation of the comic book-y world Joel Schumacher created.  I really did.  I'm a 30 yr old adult now and still can enjoy that movie!!  I can't dare mention that on another Bat forum because the Nolanites really don't understand not every movie has to be a 'martin scorsese masterpiece'.  And sometimes a movie can be made just to entertain.  Batman Forever set out to entertain and it did just that, so I feel it succeeded. 


Well as of recently, I had to leave my 'Avengers' mode to get into Batman bc I wanted to enjoy Dark Knight Rises.  So I watched the Nolan films.  I must say, the realism of the films is over rated in Batman Begins.  There is alot of comic book-y stuff in that one.  TDK is a pure crime drama that was realistic, so I was kind of impressed how they did that.  Then TDKR came out and its like they went back to the Batman Begins phase of comic book-y stuff.  Which I don't mind, but the movie sets out to be realistic, and it fails to deliver.  So I dont get the hype. 

I really like the Nolan series.  Its an interesting take on the character and I can appreciate that it does borrow elements of the comic book and gave us serious incarnations of Ras Al Ghul, Bane, Scarecrow and even re-did Joker , Catwoman and Two Face and made them all interesting.  But its fans really bothered me how the fans worship the series and put it on the same level as "godfather".  The fans are really just younger kids who make an effort to scream their opinion and bash anyone else who disagrees with them to the point where their arrogance is shown quite clearly.  Burton films were artistic, Schumacher films were popcorn entertainment, but the Nolan films seemed to try to be 'cinematic dramatic masterpieces' and i think the Nolan films falls quite short of masterpieces.  Its a comic book movie no matter how you dress it up and I think they dont get that, lol.  Thats why avengers was so much freaking fun.  marvel knows is a comic book movie and gives you just that, thus it succeeds!  But as much as I complain about aspects of Nolan Bat films, the truth is I enjoy them just because its a neat incarnation of the character.  I just also happen to feel they could have done so much more with it.  Riddler and Penguin could be 'realistic' in a sequel.  You could expand on Robin character.  But they kind of were already burnt out, as you could tell by the TDKR movie.  The certainly WEAKEST of the series that seemed like they just threw a first draft out there and said 'There....Done.....Now we can conclude this thing and move on".  God, that bugged me.  Quite telling everyone you're sick of doing Batman films.  This franchise is my passion.  I get it - you want to do other things, but every interview, every review "The last Batman movie before a reboot". 

For the reboot - I want to attempt a few ideas for this forum just for fun..  The truth is WB has no clue what they want except they will do another one to make more money.

Hi all.  Gregg Bray here.

First off, I LOVE that there are threads that talk about the cinematic and cultural influences in the Burton and Nolan films. I LOVE it.  There are so many references in TDKR from the comics that I would have never caught (such as the Red Rain epilogue) that was brought to my attention here.  While TDKR is not my cup of tea, I can not discount it as being too distant from the comics.  From the comics I enjoy?  Sure.  From the comics in general?  No.  It thrills me to see that there is a form where Batman can be discussed in a free and open manner without concerns of people being pushed into 'pro' or 'anti' camps.  So good job to all my new and old friends here. 


Second: as some of you are aware, I belonged to another site for a very long time.  I had been communicating with the key administrator one-on-one for about 14 years before finally joining the forum in 2003 on that site.  At the time I had some reluctance to join. I enjoyed being a lurker.  But then I saw some conversations I wanted to get involved in and Bob's your uncle.

I found *this* forum (batman-online) somewhere around 2008 (I believe) after a group of peers from the other forum left due to policies that seemed to be in conflict.  Though I've always enjoyed this forum, I stayed with the other forum more, as I had been given moderator status, even as more and more of my peers were either banned or left voluntarily.  There seemed to be a double standard developing over there.  The admins could use put-down language, but those who disagreed could not.  When they were called on the double standard--banned!  I voluntarily left the site, but continued posting on Facebook.  I was then blocked from the FB page, and sent a message telling me that I was being deactivated from the forum entirely. 

In the end--I don't mind.  I think the key administrator was correct in his email--the site no longer reflects my views and my interests.  My views are this: all views are valid.  You want to tell me BandR was the best Batman film go for it.  I won't agree, but I'm interested in hearing this.  You want to tell me TDKR is a masterpiece and that BR is a problematic film, it's fair.  At the end of the day it neither picks my pocket or does me injury.  But you want to tell me my opinion is invalid, and that my behavior is 'typical fanboy bs' because I like it when people talk about their interests without being coerced....ehh....then you're no longer reflecting my views and interests.    

Truth be told, I do have some respect for the site I left/am barred from, and for the key administrators.  In person, I think they're actually quite nice people.   But I think that their desire to have their views heard by WB overwhelms any other function the site could possibly have--such as fans of Batman's cinematic and television counter parts having engaged dialogues about their interests, etc. 

So I hope my reappearance and subsequent posting here doesn't look too much like a man arriving with his hat in hand, tail between his legs boasting a "umm...sorry guys...turns out the other party wasn't as cool as I thought it was....you guys still playing?" attitude.      It's a pleasure to be active in this community again.  Thanks for having me.
