The Bat (SPOILERS)

So what did everyone think of Batman's new aircraft?

When I first saw the leaked pictures I hated the look of it. Everyone was saying it was the new Batwing. Admittedly I'm no expert on aviation, but I would expect a vehicle called a Batwing to have wings and to resemble a bat. This didn't.

But after seeing the movie I realised it wasn't meant to be an update of the Batwing/Batplane. It's more a descendent of the Whirly-Bat/Batcopter. We haven't seen a live-action variation of that since Batman: the Movie. And this is the first live action Batman film in which Batman's aircraft doesn't get shot down by the villain.

I thought it looked a damn sight more realistic than the hi-tech vehicles in most modern fantasy films. And by realistic I mean it looked like it was really there, as opposed to something that was created entirely in a computer.

It was interesting to see Batman go all 'Giants of Hugo Strange' on Talia's van at the end. And I liked the fact that the film's finale, where Batman was trying to get the bomb out of Gotham, was essentially a modern reworking of the classic "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb" scene from Batman: The Movie.

I still prefer the Batwing, but I thought the Bat was pretty cool. It's my favourite of the Nolan vehicles. Much better than the Tumbler or the Bat-Pod IMO.

say what you will  about Burton but his vehicles were ALL better than Nolans.

There's this weird contradiction in the Nolan films where Bruce Wayne wants Batman to be a symbol.  He's got the Batsuit, the Batarangs, and the Bat Signal.

And yet, unlike the source material, the bat on his chest is muted (and shrinks when transitioning into the suit of the last two movies) and none of his vehicles have any kind of bat motif to them.  Nothing so much as the bat insignia on it.  And since Bruce takes so much of his equipment from Wayne Enterprises, you would think he'd add his own touch to it to disguise it from the people in his company who built it.  Unless they're all in on him being Batman, but that's obviously not the case.

Overall, I was rather apathetic towards it and I've gotten used to the Nolan Batvehicles looking the way they are.

It's odd to have a vehicle called "The Bat" when it doesn't even look like a bat and I was amused that it was the last vehicle in the franchise when, around the time Dark Knight came out, many fanboys were saying that the Batwing wouldn't fit Nolan's universe.
That awkward moment when you remember the only Batman who's never killed is George Clooney...

it also detracts from the argument that Nolan follows the comics and Burton doesn't when there's heavy criticism for all 3 vehicles;

-the tumbler looks nothing like the batmobile. The batmobile you could drive through the streets of gotham and at points batman wasn't a fugutive, this wasn't a problem. It was also the type of scare tactic, simply driving it around would scare people (similar to the bat signal tactic gordon uses in the dark knight)
-the biggest issue with the batpod is that Batman rarely drove 2 wheelers, that seems to be more of a side kick thing.
-as mentioned 'the bat' why couldn't it be a bat wing? Also are we truly led to believe that as talented as Lucious Fox is, he can't seem to figure out auto pilot?

Batman's vechicles in the Nolan films just have some dumb names.

Hearing the name "The Bat" I think of Batman himself.

Two words, Anton Furst.  His designs effected the look of the 89 film just as much as Burton.

Anton Furst was a true comic book movie genius. I'm saddened he took his own life and never lived long enough to see how much his incredible designs fired thousands of young fans imaginations for years more to come (myself included).

I enjoyed the key action scenes with The Bat very much. However as a design it is utterly crap when you stand either Batwing (yes! even the one from Forever! lol) next to it. Even my mum, who is a casual Batman fan, thought it looked too "bug-like" than the awesome sharp Batwing she bought for me as a kid. But I don't hate it. I'm open to new vehicles being introduced in each film however bizaare. I liked the ending of Rises because to me it harkened back to the ending of Burton's flicks where they tossed a surprise new Bat vehicle in for the finale.

I don't know how you can say something doesn't "look like the Batmobile".  The Tumbler looks more "like the Batmobile" than the Clooney car.  The original burgandy sedan used by Batman doesn't "look like the Batmobile" either really.  It's black, its loud, it has gadgets and it has a rocket booster.  How much more do you want?

And the Bat is an original vehicle as far as I'm concerned.  I loved it; it fit with the story and what we've come to learn about Wayne Enterprises and Fox's research.

What about the Burtonmobile?
