TDKR Trailer Discussion Thread

Just got back from Sherlock Holmes 2 and saw the Dark Knight Rises trailer, so I thought I'd open up discussion.

The opening Alfred line was quite interesting and emotional- "I swore to them that I would protect you and I haven't."  I hope Alfred has a bigger role in this than he did in The Dark Knight.

Right away, I noticed Bruce walking with a cane- possibly due to an encounter with Bane?

Also, was it just me or does it seem as if Bruce has wound up in some kind of foreign prison, when he hears the chanting?

It also looks like Gordon is stepping down from being a Commissioner and Matthew Modine's character is another cop (which is a lot better than him being a corrupt politician named Nixon, as rumored).  Interesting comment that this is "peace time" in Gotham.  Has Batman succeeded in stopping crime?

There seems to be a sequence at a masquerade ball at the Manorwhich includes Bruce, Selina, and Miranda Tate.  Bruce and Miranda seem to get along.  Selina and Bruce, judging from their dialogue, might not.  She seems to resent Bruce and his riches.  There are shots of what looks like a mansion being raided as she's talking.  Wayne Manor?

As for Bane's voice, I couldn't quite make out the first part of what he says.  The voice isn't at all what I expected from Bane or Hardy, but it certainly sounds better than the leaked audio from the stadium awhile back.

An interesting note is that the trailer seemed to cover scenes that had been caught in set photos, almost as if trying to say "We know some people have seen these parts behind the scene.  Let's show them to you in action now."  There was Bane and Batman fighting during the day.  The Batwing flying.  The football stadium (with the major special effect of collapsing the football field, which seems a little out of place in Nolan's universe.  It does seem to validate rumors, though, of Bane having some kind of machine that causes earthquakes).

Still, visually, it's a bit weird to watch it and think "Batman."  There's a few shots of Batman in costume.  None of Catwoman.  Little of Gordon.  Instead, there's a lot of bright daylight scenes with the football stadium and a Bane that has little visual resemblance to the one in the comics.
That awkward moment when you remember the only Batman who's never killed is George Clooney...

My thoughts:

Bane gets people worked up about rich people and drags them out of their homes, including Wayne, and locks them or just him up. There was talk about SWAT rappelling down Wayne Manor, but I think it's Bane's men. I think Bruce's identity will come out to the public, and when it does its the reverse of Harvey's nature being revealed. Bane is scared that his narrative will fall apart when people realise this rich guy is selflessly risking his life for everyone. But Bane also has that urge to rub salt into his wound, to let him witness Gotham's downfall. Peace has lasted for a decent length of time. Nolan has said as much, that he wanted Batman and Gordon's sacrifice at the end of TDK to mean something. And to last long enough to be credible. And then Bane enters the picture.

^ I think there's likely some kind of conflict of the classes based on that one part of the trailer.  What timing considering the whole Occupy Wall Street movement going on.

Anyone know what the full Bane line in the trailer is?  I heard "Gotham" "ashes" and "give you permission to die."
The description of him sounding like Darth Vader with an accent is apt.  There's definitely some kind of accent there.  Not sure if it's South American or if this version of the character will be South American like in the comics.  I'll have to check out the prologue, but I've heard word of him sounding either British or Russian.

random thoughts
-it looks like instead of being portrayed as an anti-hero or a tragic 'good person turned bad via circumstance', Selina will start off as a sinister individual
-I've heard from multiple sources Bane does in fact give Bruce/Batman a big beatdown early in the film (this may be why Alfred is saying he failed)
-this film takes place 8 years after the previous one and yet Harvey Dent is still being remembered.
-this is pure speculation on my part but here is how I think Gothams evolved;
We see Gotham as a corrupt town where the good cops are in the minority and the mop runs the city through scare tactics and being in cahoots with the corrupt cops. The events of Batman Begins show Gotham the mobs true colours as does Gordons ascension up in the ranks cleaning up the mob and eventually Harvey taking the stand. At the beginning of the dark knight we see the mob fight back and enlist a man they don't quite understand (the Joker) and a shewed businessman (lau). Batman, Dent, and Gordon take them down and even the mob head Maroni sees the anarchy the Joker's caused and realizes it's too much. Dent takes the law into his own hands and takes down those responsible for the chaos. With Gordon now commissioner, the mob backing dowm. and Batman inspiring Gotham, peace finally prevails in gotham. 8 years later Gotham is like New York in August 2001; having it's guard down for a terrorist to take over.

Maybe not sinister, per se. If she's had a tough life, and Bruce has been living it up, she'd find that annoying - and hopefully in turn that's where she gets her thieving concept from. A female Robin Hood, but for herself. She might agree with Bane's message about the rich initially, but as soon as she sees what he does (blow up stadiums for example) she turns very cold on the idea. And finds out Bruce isn't what he presents after all.

Am I right in thinking at all the rich folk in Gotham are being rounded up and imprisoned? Is this how Bane knows of Batman's identity - via ransacking Wayne Manor?

Well sinister in the sense that she's not going to start out as the nerdy secretary ala Pfeiffer. Like you said she's more of a Robin hood type. Burton didn't portray the cat burgalar stuff too heavily, he made her more randomly chaotic.

Yes. And I don't think this is how he finds out about Bruce's identity. I see Batman taking on Bane in the sewers and getting owned. His mask is removed (which it is, check out the footage after the IMAX screenings, which shows Bane walking away with the mask and dropping it) and he finds out that way.
