Is Robert Downey Jr. the New Keaton?

So lately I've been following the Marvel casting news, first for Thor and now for Captain America. For Thor they picked this kid named Chris Hemsworth. If you look at their reported choices for Captain America, they're all young guys as well, most of whom I'm unfamiliar with. But that's probably because I'm not a 15 year old girl.

It got me thinking about how the best people for these roles tend to be older, more sophisticated actors. (Chris Reeve being the obvious exception since he got the Superman role when he was pretty young.) That's why Downey was perfect for the role.

Like Keaton, he isn't a physically imposing guy. Also, like Keaton he was primarily known for quirky, character-based roles. But he had a presence that made you believe this guy really would put on an iron suit and kick some ass. I can understand that Marvel wants to cast young so that the actors will still be in their prime for sequel #8. But chances are the movies will get rebooted after part 3 anyway.

Here's the Captain America rumored choices, some of which I believe have since been nixed:

As far as Captain America goes, it appears John Krasinski is leading the way.

Ok, now the sources are saying John's out and Garrett Hedlund, Mike Vogel, and of all people, Chris Evans are in.

Ah, what a day.

"Imagination is a quality given a man to compensate him for what he is not, and a sense of humour was provided to console him for what he is."

Yea, I was thinking he's probably going to be the one. I've never actually watched "The Office" so I don't know how he compares to Downey or Keaton.

Evans is probably a better fit, he's done action films before and given some very good performances (Sunshine, Cellular). He could probably pull it off, just bulk up a bit.

I'm not too sure about Krasinski as Captain America.  He seems a little too goofy for a character that is meant to embody the All-American ideal.  To put it in context, imagine if Martin Freeman was cast as Captain Britain...
Johnny Gobs got ripped and took a walk off a roof, alright? No big loss.

Now we got Ryan Phillippe, and Channing Tatum going in for screen tests.

Tatum is absolutely atrocious. I was never much on Evans as Cap, but Tatum?!? The thought of that is simply horrendous!

Yea, I'm surprised they still haven't made up their mind. The movie was announced in 2008. Looking at the current contenders, I don't see any of these guys giving orders to Robert Downey or standing up to Sam Jackson.

Although Mark Valley probably could...

He seems to have the right look and build, but they might be going for someone a little younger.

Unfortunately, yes.

Otherwise, Mark Valley would work. Also Aaron Eckhart would be another.
