Madonna as The Joker's Wife

Actually, I now am a fan of Madonna, but this didn't happen anyway, so whatever.

Oh my, those post-B&R rumors. Madonna as Harley Quinn, Jeff Goldblum as Scarecrow, and the Nicholson cameo in hallucination scenes. Good times...  :)

It's interesting that Harley was going to be the Joker's daughter. Before Harley Quinn was introduced (in 1992), there had been an earlier villain called Harlequin who'd first appeared in 1976. Her real name was Duela Dent, and like Harleen Quinzel, she was completely insane and dressed like a clown.

Initially she was conceived as being the daughter of Harvey Dent. But over the years she claimed to be the daughter of several other super villains. Eventually it was established that Duela was the daughter of the Jokester, the Earth-Three version of the Joker. Sometimes she even operated under the name The Joker's Daughter.

There are certain superficial similarities between Harlequin and Harley Quinn. Bob Rozakis, Harlequin's creator, once said:

QuoteActually, I consider Harley Quinn to be a reincarnation of Duela.

So it appears Schumacher's intention was to mix the two characters together, similar to how he amalgamated the Betty Kane and Barbara Gordon Batgirls in Batman and Robin. I'm not sure how well that would've worked though. Especially if Madonna was playing the role.

Lets just say when she sang at the superbowl i went to my room oh the giant won that game
you ever dance with the devil on a pale moon light

I thought her Superbowl performance was fine.

Madonna has spanned generations, influenced her field and has an identity of her own.

Fair enough i never been into halftime shows but tht just me.

Let's be honest here Madonna is not exactly renowned for her acting talent. In fact she's positively lampooned. Always enjoyed her music since I was a kid and admire her very much but she clearly just needed to stick to that great music. Having said that I geniunely thought she was great in Dick Tracy. There is an excellent harbour scene between her and Beatty. I mean it's that Evita thing that critics choose to remember and so her work in Warren Beatty's little comic book caper is hardly going to blip on their radars. She aint that bad with comedy in A League Of Their Own either. Unfortunately these are few and far between. But if I could accept Kylie Minogue in Doctor Who I can accept anyone.

Very much intrigued she may have been/was actually cast as Harley Quinn. Can you imagine her as Jack Nicholson's daughter? As mad as The Joker himself. It'd be "Holiday" coming out of Lawrence's ghetto blaster next, not "Partyman" lol

Harley was played appalingly I believe in the Birds of Prey show by the girl out of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Interesting bit of casting there but to my recollection it hardly resembled the character we all know. But to those who are deeply offended by the idea that our beloved Harley nearly got played by Madonna I'd suggest you to check out the 1987 film "Who's that Girl" (if you can bear it!). Saw it myself last year out of interest, terrible in many ways but check out Madonna in it. She had that Harley-esque, squeeky, "Betty Boop" voice, mannerisms (even sporting a few guns) and truck loads of screwball humor in Harley's style. This could be what Joel Schumacher was on to. I really think she could have pulled it off far better.

Granted. She wouldn't be my first choice in a role. Though like she really cares. Even if she thinks she's a terrible actress, it's just another form of expression. She knows how to get people riled up. She's apparently so irrelevant but draws such a large response. Recently she was banned from a cinema. I like how she doesn't back down or care even if she's in the wrong, and pushes it back.

Human Nature

I'm not apologising - Would it sound better if I were a man?
You're the one with the problem - Why don't you just deal with it?
I have no regrets - just look in the mirror

I don't have to justify anything
I'm just like you - Why should I be?
Deal with it

Exactly. I heard about that cinema banning lol I think she was in the wrong there but y'know people do pick on "celebrity types" as it's newsworthy. I see people with camera phones in movies and concerts all the time and it greatly pisses me off. But nobody bans them. So she has my sympathy. Also heard some other terrible news that happened to her from her earlier days that truly shocked me. Won't go into it here to keep these boards a little lighter in tone. Hard to be believe somebody abused her in a horrific way. Because she's always been a very cool, strong woman to me and I couldn't imagine anything like that being done to her in particular.

In an age where we now have the Dark Knight trilogy I guess this "Batman Triumphant" (it needed a better title) is no big loss to some. But oh man hearing these rumours I really don't give a toss I'd have LOVED to have seen this. I can't help it lol I won't be told the Nolan series is more sacred to have gotten! Nicholson returning as The Joker? Man-Bat? Martin Short as The Mad Hatter? Howard Stern/Jeff Goldblum as The Scarecrow and then the "Material Girl" herself as Harley Quinn? Packed to the brim with mad concepts. Just a fun mixture. I always liked when the Batman movies went after huge "stars" to play the villains back in the 90's. It's a tradition that for me began back in the 60's tv series. Even the animated series got at it. Recently Tom Hanks expressed his interest to be a villain in the next movies. There is something about the Batman characters that lures big names to it's universe. Much more so than the Marvel movies.

Just been looking at some Dick Tracy publicity pics of Madonna from 1990 and to me she has that Harley smile/grin in most of them. In Bruce Timm's model sheets the character already has sort of Madonna-esque poses even. I'm sure she'd have no trouble bringing all that to life.
