I guess this thread will kind of give away our ages but it's a subject that always interests me.

To be honest, most modern horror films don't really scare me.  Not because they aren't good (well not all of them anyway), but simply now that I'm older I don't scare so easily.  Yet, when I was a kid some of the most seemingly benign kids' films used to freak me out, and still have a greater affect on me today than any proper modern horror film.  I guess we (or at least I) tend to harbour some of the intense feelings we had as kids.

Anyway, for the record some of the kids films that used to freak me out when I was young were Young Sherlock Holmes, Return to Oz, The Worst Witch, some parts of Gremlins, and even the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (which seems stupid now, but it was partly to do with the book whose ideas were pretty bizarre).

Anyway, anyone got their own suggestions for scary kids films?

It wouldn't neccessarily give away our age because you could watch an oler film etc. For example The Exorcist is the scariest movie I've ever seen and I was born years after it came out. In fact when I first saw it, the scene with Linda Blair on fire standing up on the bed, made me pass out! I woke up hours later in my parents bed! I've only seen it about 2 times after that many years ago.

Burnt Offerings was scary for me because of the dread, not neccessarily the images.

Other mentionables : Child's play, Jaws, Friday 13th.

True, but there are those films which have a generational effect, and those films like The Exorcist for instance, that are timeless.  The Exorcist is actually one of my all-time favourite horror films, along with Carrie, and The Thing and Invasion of the Body Snatchers remakes.  However, maybe because I was in my late teens when I saw it, it never really scared me, in the sense of giving me nightmares.  It was a film that disturbed me more on an intellectual sense.

I forgot The Thing! I actually saw that a few months ago again on Syfy and I must say I got very tense at certain parts. I would call it a classic horror and some of the best creature makeup/design put on film.

The Thing? Awesome. Horror, suspense, great sfx.

batman returns. lol.

Which bits scared you Catwoman?  The bit that freaked me out was the shot of The Penguin screaming after being informed by the monkey that Batman had released the kidnapped children, when the camera seemed to move into The Penguin's bile-filled mouth.  Also, the charred remains of Max Shreck after he'd been electrocuted was pretty freakish.
