Burton and Nolan similarities (BatmAngelus style and more universal)

This is a list of similarities between the Nolan and Burton films. This is probably more universal then the last one that shown up. I put it here due to not knowing where it would go. So seeing the other one, I decided on here for now.

This will act more in a way as BatmAngelus's Influences threads. It notes only the facts as at least the resulting content of the film to the viewer. Or in other words, it's not known whether it's unintended. Therefore, full freedom is permitted, though is not to be misinterpreted as 100% intended to be from Burton's.

It should be also noted that many Bat Man films are similar due to taking from the basic structure of the source. BatMan was not created from scratch, but from sources which Nolan would also use. It can be also noted that many villains in the BatMan universe played out the same crimes or ideas similar enough at times, only its given extra meaning based upon the character.



BatMan Begins

For the most part, this is very un-similar at the beginning, due to taking from Miller's work more then the original 40's sources. However, as it gets going, there can be some similarities noted.

BM

1. In BatMan's fully armored appearance, he would take down thugs at work. Not only does it end with "I'm Batman", but the person this is told to ends needing to be seen by special personal due to the claims of what he had seen, which turns out to be ScareCrow. He babbles like a fool due to his toxin and is claimed legaly insane at the asylum. Though not much is shown in Burton's, most likely several are taken off to an asylum later. It is at least similar in the theme of a horror film with BatMan himself. However, in Nolan's, much more was ScareCrow's doing.

2. BatMan would save his would-be girl friend and give her information of sorts. Later he would take her to the Bat Cave. The story plays out similarly to Burton's in that it is to do with the toxin plot, which also plays out similarly in hysteria in one section of Gothem at the end. In both, the would-be girl friend is given an answer or antidote to the villain?s main plans of attack.

3. The main plot would be similar to Joker's in Burton's despite being from the comic as well. The mixture of the gassing and water contamination stories would resemble the lines BatMan and Vale share in the Bat Cave. Alone, the toxin is untracable and nothing to the supply of water, but given something else, it becomes a powerful hallucinogen.

4. A party Wayne hosts is interrupted. On Burton's, Wayne listens in to find out where Gordon is going. This leads to the moment Joker is created. On Begins, the party is oppositely fully interrupted. Similarly, this is when Ducard is revealed to be Ra's Al Ghul and where he finally begins to become a threat to Gothem.

5. The would-be girl friend finds out who BatMan is at the very end in both.

BR

1. The man in charge of Waynes enterprise would not only be partly shown as a bad person, he also resembles Max and Walken, the person who played him.

2. BatMan uses bats to confuse the crowd of spectaters and a means of escape.

Additional BB similarities.

1. Ra's Al Ghul would be made as a part of BatMan's past in the same manner which puts a personal ordeal between the two. Most likely, Burton put Joker in with BatMan's past (as he directly stated it as well, "apart of BatMan's past"), to let the reasoning of being the arch nemesis of BatMan grow pass a fan base ethic (IGN.com notes the same thing in the top 100 villains of all time, questioning why Joker ever was the supreme villain with other's similarly personal and deep conflicts with BatMan)..

A strong similarity can be found between many other stories of student and master turned against each other. This is due to the bond and friendship between the two along with the fact it was he who gave the abilities to him. It is always a strong story.

2. Black Latex rubber suit with a thick rounded cowl (fixed by thinning rubber in Returns).

3. The first name of the man who plays alfred is Micheal.




The Dark Knight

This one makes Joker appear as he originally did, exactly as BatMan did in Burton's. It does not explain a thing; it's just there in the story already. As in Burton's, this is to give an additional kick and similarity to the comic in the way it happened and evolved. Here are the noticeable similarities between BatMan and BatMan Returns.

BM

1. Joker would go into a mob meeting for his second majorly viewable apperance, killing a man in each. Joker would be dissrespected and stared at in both meetings. In the end, Joker would also kill the man who would be face to face to him on the other end of the table, in a similar fashion of a burning to death.

2. Joker would assult a large public place looking for Harvey dent. It is similar in that he would make contact with the would-be girl friend. She resists Joker in a similar manner, even making some small physical contact with him. BatMan would interupt this conflict shortly after.

3. Joker would tell BatMan to reveal himself in a manner on the air wave. However, Burton's would only present this in a manner that brings people's trust towards him in a type of political vein. It would not be plot heavy.

4. Joker would face off against BatMan, however, it appears to be in an opposite fashion. In Burton's BatMan is doing the firing and Joker misses every bullet. In Nolan's, Joker would be doing the firing and BatMan the missing. In the end, BatMan crashes in a way on both.

5. In continuity, BatMan would begin beating Joker after this event. In each said event, they would begin speaking in a similar manner. In Burton's, it's about who made who, while in Nolan's, it's more or less about BatMan completing Joker, this film's version of the Red Hood stories. On a side note, Joker would have the would-be girl friend kidnapped in a manner.

6. Joker would fall off a building at the end of both. While in Nolan's world Joker can only survive if landing in water or the said help of BatMan, it's also possible that Burton's Joker could have survived in a notion of the many so-called deaths of the comic, one of which was clearly from a cliff with no water nearby.

BR

1. The Bat Mobile would have an additional separation method. In Nolan's the tumbler would face damage, in Burton's, it was only due to a tight spot (though it's eerily similar in that it faced damage right before splitting).

2. BatMan would become a fugitive at the end, though this will play out more in the 3rd film rather this one. In both, the authorities would think BatMan killed someone in the manner of a push atop a high structure.

3. Some of the influences of the sequel would come from several sources which came out at or after the year of the first film's release.

Additional similarities

1. Joker has created one to go to the dark side in a sense of vengance. In Burton's it is BatMan himself, getting revenge on all crooks. In Nolan's it's Two-Face getting a more specific revenge. This plot is inspired by TKJ, with Two-Face and Racheal acting as Gordon and Barbra, just as Bruce and Vale would. Make note that Vale was originally going to die by Joker's hands but was changed, but not so by Burton.

2. On the same subject, Joker has caused a comic book character to become, replacing the original thugs who did in Dent's face the second time with him or his own men. On this notion, Two-face also replaces a more ordinary thug from the comic at the end with himself.

3. The scar cut design existed as a concept in the Burton film as well, which can be viewed on the Burton section of the behind the scenes photos. Two drawn heads out of three would yeild these cuts and it would not be used. The Joker here resembles a young Tim Curry, another choice Burton and/or his crew had in mind or was at least rumoured.

Thank you. For some of the extra ones I have found, I'm not certain weather to edit it or make a new post.

EDIT: What I meant is the reasoning for splitting, actually. TDK was more on the fact that it was too damaged and he escaped like it was an escape pod. In BR, though the rest splits off, this is apart of the process. BR was about getting through the ally way despite Penguin and BatMan himself laying some damage down before hand.

Great analysis man! It's good to see that Bruton's and Nolan's Bats have similarities.
