After the Joker falls to his death, a recorded laughing track loops endlessly as Gotham Police gather around the body. Commissioner Gordon removes some object wrapped in green silk from the Joker's jacket, and observes it closely.

I, for one, never understood what that gadget was supposed to be. My only guess was it could've been some sort of personal alarm clock, much to my lack of imagination. According to the official comic adaptation, however, the object is simply revealed as a "laugh box".

Very weird way to end the scene.
QuoteJonathan Nolan: He [Batman] has this one rule, as the Joker says in The Dark Knight. But he does wind up breaking it. Does he break it in the third film?

Christopher Nolan: He breaks it in...

Jonathan Nolan: ...the first two.

Yeah. Batman 1989 had alot of improvisational moments during filming. The laugh box being just another example.
"Imagination is a quality given a man to compensate him for what he is not, and a sense of humour was provided to console him for what he is."

I always figured it's something he carried around because if he did die, he'd have the last laugh

I'm not certain of that. I think it's just an item he had on his person, no different to the chattering teeth or the poison flower.
