He does make a good point that people tend to gravitate towards deeply troubled characters, even if they don't realise it themselves.

With that being said, Superman can be a complex character. You only have to take a look at John Byrne's run or even the Earth One comics as an example. It just depends on whether people are willing to accept that. Unfortunately, judging by the common criticisms of Superman in the DCEU, people do seem to want a caricature of the character instead.

That's attributed to Nixon talking to a portrait of Kennedy. But it could as easily have been said by Batman to Superman.
