A visually gorgeous and thematically interesting film which didn't try and outdo B89, but instead took a whole other approach.

 I'm just a poor schmoe who got lucky to be a sidekick, and sue me if I wanna give some back!.  I only wish I could hand out world peace and unconditinal love for the Burton Batman films, wrapped in a big bow! ;)

Happy Anniversary! :)

I saw Returns twenty years ago when I was seven years old. I began watching BTAS around that time too. Fun times.  :)

we all started watching btas around that time. lol.

unquestionably my fave movie ever. there was a time that i had almost a love hate relationship with it (if yall remember when i was first registered i had batman forever listed as my fave bat movie lol) but in the years since i have come to love everything about it and the array of emotions it makes me feel when watching. it covers the whole spectrum and instead of hating the negative things it stirs in me i love and appreciate that. i don't have to close my eyes and "pretend this is a happy ending" lol

I'm not dissing B89 here to legitimise BR, (as said, they take different approaches) but I prefer the overall spirit of BR's ending. A bittersweet, pyrrhic victory of sorts. The day has been saved, but everything went to hell. Selina turned away from Bruce and he's going away back to his castle with Alfred, the same old status quo. The cue 'A Shadow of Doubt/End Credits' has a lovely yearning rendition of the Elfman Batman theme, from 1.07-1.25. Opposed to B89 where we are left with Batman as Gotham's champion and Vicki smiling.

In the original series return had the most unique ending;

Batman: off to fight crime after winning the city over
Batman Forever: Bruce conquers his demons and allows him to don the cape as a choice rather than a duty and now has a partner
Batman and Robin: the partnership crisis is solved, Alfred is all better, their duo is up to 3.

The events of Batman returns did not progress things for any of the characters, the only positive which came for the protagonists is the fall of Max Shreck. Poor Bruce was likely tortured looking for Selina and while she wasn't treated well, her 9 to 5 job was over and she likely lead a very different life afterwards.

If you take it as a dark fairy tale, the ending was befitting; nobody got their happily ever after.

The ending of this movie is hauntingly beautiful and moving. From Penguin's burial to the very end when the Bat Signal comes on, Catwoman appears and the excellent credits music begins and ends. Especially good is the sadness of the car driving off into the city as the camera moves up and the music goes from sad to triumphant when the Bat Signal appears and Catwoman shows up. Then it becomes more sad and even disturbing during the ending credits. Michael Keaton does some excellent acting in that scene. This is all arguably my favorite part of the movie. Although maybe not. But if not it's close.
