"Dick Tracy", and "Godzilla 1998" really do have parallel similarities. In that both were expected to have success on par with previous successful films (Batman 1989/Jurassic Park), both having huge campaigns/marketing blitz/merchandise upon release, and both not outright failing, but unfortunately also not reaching the profit bar that was set in expectation by their respective studios.

Where they certainly differ, is it's recognizable that "Dick Tracy" was a passion project for Beatty, and "Godzilla 1998" was Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich just having fun with their own 'giant monster loose in a big city' movie with the Godzilla name slapped on it. I like both, and have a lot of nostalgia for both, but as they say, "It is what it is."
"Imagination is a quality given a man to compensate him for what he is not, and a sense of humour was provided to console him for what he is."
