While this might not be worthy of a feature, I still think it'd be cool to track all the Joker Goons seen in Batman, and what scenes they appeared. Also note that most of these will use the actors' names, since all but Bob, Lawrence, and Terence were unnamed in the film. Also special thanks to 1989 Batman for their sharing of rare publicity stills, which greatly helped with this. Also, main cast is ordered by relative importance.

Primary Cast:

Name: Robert Hawkins (played by Tracey Walter)
Identifying Characteristics: Scar on lower left cheek

Bob was the only known carry over from Grissom's men (despite it being said that Joker employed those previously working for Grissom). As Jack Napier's close friend and partner, Bob held a high position under the Joker, and was in charge of the goon faction. Bob appeared in all goon scenes.

He first appeared in his new position as Joker intimidated the gangsters in Grissom's headquarters. While he did not accompany Joker and the rest of the goons outside of Town Hall, he was present on the side investigating Knox. After a one-on-one scene with Joker, he joins the whole gang destroying paintings in the museum with his knife (but sparing Francis Bacon's Figure With Meat at The Joker's request). After Batman's interference, he gives pursuit in the car driven by Carl Chase's character, along with Richard Strange and Mac McDonald's goon. After cornering Batman and seemingly incapacitating him, he fought off all of Bob's men, leaving Bob to scramble back to The Joker (or give a brief fight in the deleted scene).

The next day, Bob and Lawrence accompanied Joker to Vicki Vale's apartment, where Bob brought Joker's "gift." Finally, Bob is once again seen at The Joker's side during the parade, dancing and throwing out money to the crowd. After Joker's plan to gas the crowd fails after Batman's interference, Bob obediently hands his gun over to The Joker, whom immediately shoots him with little remorse. Joker then hands his pistol to Chase as the goons break up the crowd.

Name: Lawrence (played by George Lane Cooper)
Identifying Characteristics: Cauliflowered right ear

Lawrence is third in command, coming after Bob. Lawrence was first seen at the meeting of the gangsters, arriving at Joker's side. Lawrence posed as a mime, along with the rest of the goons while Joker assassinated Vinnie Ricorso. Lawrence's makeup was that of a traditional clown with a red nose; he later brandishes a tommy gun to cover The Joker's getaway (seen firing and reloading when Vicki ducks for cover).

At the museum, Lawrence provided the music with his famous boom box playing "Party Man" by Prince. He also joins the fun by spray painting The Blue Boy by Jonathan Buttal, and spraying a dollar sign on Gilbert Stuart's George Washington (The Athenaeum Portrait). After Joker meets with Vicki, Joker switches the song to Danny Elfman's "Beautiful Dreamer" (composed by Stephen Foster).

While not visible, it seems that Lawrence's group was the one that got cut off during the chase with the Batmobile. The next day, Lawrence and Bob went along with Joker to Vicki's apartment, where Lawrence played more sappy love music for Vicki on his boom box.

During The Joker's parade, Lawrence helped hold up the first balloon on the back left of The Joker's float. After Batman foils The Joker's plan, Lawrence and Tan flank his boss offscreen as he ascends the steps to the top of the Gotham Cathedral. When Batman gives pursuit of The Joker, Lawrence sneaks up on Batman and pounces, only to misjudge his jump and fall through the rotted wood floor to his death.

Actor: Carl Chase
Identifying Characteristics: Scar across chin

Chase is first seen as one of the four goons who rush into the meeting room with the gangsters, menacingly pointing a tommy gun. At covering Joker's escape after his assassination at Town Hall, disguised as a mime. Chase is identified by the "happy" clown makeup.

At the art museum, Chase carries two brushes and an artist's palette. Chase immediately paints over Rembrandt's Syndicates of the Drapers' Guild. Chase looks over at Batman's escape from the ground floor, and hops into a 1977 Dodge Monaco fitted as a Joker Goon Car (along with Richard Strange, Mac McDonald, and Bob the Goon) in pursuit of the Batmobile. Cutting off Batman, him and Strange fire two shots into Batman. Him and Strange deduct that he uses body armor, and begins to take off his mask at the orders of Bob. After being interrupted by Vicki Vale's photography, Batman awakens to fight off the squad one by one. Chase is second, being punched in the face, and thrown over the roof of the car into a trash can.

During the parade, Chase is seen at the top of the float with The Joker and Bob. After Batman breaks it up, Chase is stunned as Joker kills Bob with his own weapon. Passing the pistol onto Chase, him and Strange fend off the crowd. He either escapes and is caught by the GCPD, or is killed by the Batwing (can't tell).

Actor: Richard Strange
Identifying Characteristics: Scar across lips

Strange is first seen rushing into the meeting room with the gangsters, menacingly pointing a tommy gun. At Town Hall, Strange is also seen disguised as a mime, noted for having a "sad face" design. Strange acts like a stereotypical mime, shaping an invisible box around an unamused Bruce Wayne. While goons simultaneously open fire into the crowd, Strange aims his pistol and threatens Bruce Wayne when he gets too close to The Joker. Seated next to The Joker in the getaway car, he's seen shaking his head at Bruce as the goons make their escape.

At the art museum, Strange brings a pink carpenter's box filled with painting supplies. He immediately goes to work, painting on Edgar Degas' Two Dancers on The Stage. He then slaps around Rembrandt's Self Portrait at the age of 63 before adding more to the Degas piece and finishing by splattering it with paint.

As Batman makes his escape with Vicki, Strange can only helplessly jump at him from the ground floor before giving chase in Carl Chase's Joker car. After cutting him off, Strange and Chase both fire shots into Batman. After Batman springs back into action, Strange is the first to go, getting punched across the hood of the 1977 Dodge Monaco.

During the parade, Strange is at the front of the Joker's float. After Batman's interference, Joker steps on him as he exits the float. Afterwards, he helps Chase disperse the crowd with his Tommy gun. I believe he's later killed when Batman makes his second pass with the Batwing (can't confirm, can someone provide some HQ screen caps?).

Actor: Mac McDonald
Identifying Characteristics: Long scar on left side of face

McDonald is first seen wielding tommy gun and scaring the gangers out of their meeting with The Joker. Later in front of Town Hall, McDonald is seen in mime garb with the rest of the goons. McDonald's makeup has an exaggerated red smile and tears painted under his eyes. An extended eyebrow goes along the scar on his face. He approaches behind an unassuming Bruce Wayne, and playfully pats a little girl on the head while dancing around (I'm pretty sure this is him). As with the others, he opens reveals a firearm and opens fire to cover Joker's escape.

McDonald arrives at the museum with a paintbrush and artist's palette and paints over The Spirit of '76 by Archibald Willard. He stays on the ground floor while Joker meets with Vicki. After Batman escapes with her, he gives chase in Carl Chase's Joker Goon Car. After cornering Batman, McDonald pistol whips Batman while the others knock him out. When Batman awakens to fight the goons, McDonald is the last. Batman kicks McDonald's pistol out of his hands before he can get a shot off, and is phased with a punch to the face, before getting kicked into a pile of garbage.

During The Joker's parade, McDonald helped hold up the first balloon on the front left of The Joker's float. In the midst of the chaos after Batman showed up in the Batwing, McDonald escaped. Once Joker calls his helicopter to pick him up at the top of the Gotham Cathedral, McDonald is seen as a passenger, dropping down a rope ladder to his boss, and gesturing for him to climb up (unknown to him that Batman trapped him). Him and all other surviving goons were apprehended by the GCPD after The Joker's death.

Actor: Philip Tan
Identifying Characteristics: Heart tattoos on left side of face

Tan is first seen as one of the goons rushing into the meeting room with the gangsters, intimidating them with tommy guns.

Tan was one of the gun-toting mimes present at Joker's attack on Town Hall. In place of traditional mime makeup, Tan wears a Kabuki inspired design.

When Joker and the goons crash the museum, Tan carries a bucket of ice with champagne and a candle for Joker's romantic encounter with Vicki Vale. After Batman arrives and takes Vicki, Tan is seen running down the stairs in pursuit. It's assumed that Tan's group was cut off in their pursuit of the Batmobile.

At the Joker's parade, Tan is on the float behind The Joker's. Vicki Vale spots him dancing when she uses the zoom on her camera to spot the gas hidden in the balloons. After Batman foils The Joker's plan, Tan and Lawrence flank his boss offscreen as he ascends the steps to the top of the Gotham Cathedral. By the time Batman arrives, Tan is the first to attack, doing a series of acrobatic flips before lunging at Batman with knives ejected from his boots. Batman countered by ejecting a metal piece from his palm, hitting Tan in the groin and knocking him out. Tan survived, but was eventually apprehended by GCPD.

Actor: Terence Plummer
Identifying Characteristics: Scar on left side of face

Plummer is first seen as a mime congregating in front of Town Hall. Of all the goons, Plummer is the only one to wear traditional mime makeup. He enters through an alley behind where Bob is spying, acting like a typical mime and being trapped in an invisible box. As with the others, he opens reveals a firearm and opens fire to cover Joker's escape.

At the museum, Plummer carries around a brush and an artist's palette. Plummer hands The Joker a brush so he can tag Edward Hopper's Approaching a City. He then is seen painting over a Roman bust in The Joker's trademarked green hair and red-lipped smile.

After Batman arrives, he gives chase, but his group is cut off by the Batmobile. After Batman's attack on Axis Chemicals, Plummer was seen alongside Joker in the Joker Helicopter. He's pointing a machine gun at Batman as the Joker makes his escape. Later on at The Joker's Parade, Plummer is seen at the front of The Joker's float. His fate after the Batwing's attack is unknown.

I'm tired now, I'll tackle the nonrecurring goons later.

Excellent post, Slash Man.

I enjoyed reading the thorough summaries of each goon listed.

Good stuff!!!  8)
"Imagination is a quality given a man to compensate him for what he is not, and a sense of humour was provided to console him for what he is."

Just made discovery that probably won't mean much to anyone except the most hardcore Bat-fanatics. I think I found Lawrence at the parade:

Might have to open this one in a new window:

I don't know if anyone else has a better quality cap of this, but that appears to be Lawrence, complete with mustache and bald head. Looks like he might even have a beret on (I can't really tell). What's everyone think? It's entirely possible, as Philip Tan's character also participated in the parade, and followed Joker up the Cathedral.

Also, I'm almost done writing up the second and last part. This part and the Axis goons are tricky.

Wonderful post! Well done! There's a great interview with Richard Strange that is quite enlightening especially in relation to certain scenes.
