I thought 'Batman & Robin' did use 'Heart of Ice' as the inspiration for Mr. Freeze.  Sure, it was ultimately done badly but isn't Mr Freeze's motivation almost exactly the same with regard to trying to find a cure for his cryogenically frozen wife?
Johnny Gobs got ripped and took a walk off a roof, alright? No big loss.

i meant if they made him a more tragic and sympathetic character.

You didn't find the line "I hate it when people interrupt the movie" tragic and sympathetic Catwoman?

um, no. lol.

I think it's more a matter of tone.  Arguably, with the lifted Nora Fries storyline, they did just that--adapted elements of Heart of Ice.  That said, it was done through a day-glo/camp Andy Warhol sensibility and it backfired.

I'd love to see a more serious interpretation (live action) of hoi.

You know what that line reminds me of to this day? In the late 90's there was a commercial previewing upcoming movies on I think Sky Box Office (remember that when it was brand new?!) and they used this very same clip as a promotional means lol And I still chuckle whenever I see it thank you very much because I couldn't agree more with Mr Freeze! Unfortunately we now have a new a greater menace in our theatres, the soddin iphone!!! And people who feel it's great to text on twitter when you should be watching a bloody movie. Sadly there still isn't a freezing gun for me to use in sight....

I always thought the Schumacher movies were very close to the style of the animated series. They were in fact inspired by them a lot as he mentions them on his dvd commentary track. Had they used Harley Quinn (which they were going to) that might have reflected this the strongest.

I like how the animated series actually reflects the then current Batman movies and helped fill in the gap between pictures. When your a kid three years can be a lifetime. And the animated series slotted in brilliantly between the releases of the live action series. Consider:

Batman Returns - was in production at the same time as the animated series, Gotham City's Bo Welch inspired design felt closer to me to the animated series than the original Anton Furst world, and Batman, Penguin and Catwoman had their looks based more off the movie. Elements of the original film were included such as certain design aspects of the Batmobile, the Danny Elfman theme music and of course The Joker's Jack Napier background as seen in Phantasm.

Batman Forever - the animated series began in 92 and originally ran right up until 95. It bridged that entire gap between movie 2 and 3. Robin began to feature much more prominantly and the series changed it's title to The Aventures of Batman and Robin to show this. A wise move since Robin was the talk of the series at the time with his then upcoming appearance in the live action movie. Later episodes from that time really feel like Batman Forever. Plus many of the Riddler episodes featured Robin heavily. No coincidence the filmmakers used the same idea.

Batman and Robin - the series was brought back and reimagined for 97 and to reflect the fourth movies "Bat Family", a team was constructed with a whole new costume and vehicle look. In came Batgirl while Robin graduated to Nightwing (his costume in fact in the fourth film). Animated tie-in movies such as Mr Freeze: Subzero were made. And the series adopted a lighter style after having done the dark stuff for quite a while.
