Judge Dredd: Mega City One (TV Series)

Dredd was a great movie that not enough people went to see. A sequel looks like it won't be happening, but it does appear that we will be getting a TV version.
IM Global and independent U.K. games developer and publisher Rebellion have struck a deal to make Judge Dredd: Mega City One. The show is set in a future where the East Coast of the U.S. has become a crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis. It will be an ensemble drama about a team of Judges — futuristic cops invested with the power to be judge, jury, and executioner — as they deal with the challenges the future-shocked 22nd century throws at them. Early development has begun on the show, and talent will be announced at a later date.
Very exciting. It would be so good if they could get Karl Urban back as Dredd, but we will have to wait and see.
Judge Dredd was created by John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra in 1977 and first appeared in 2000 AD, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
Attached as executive producers of the new show are IM Global Television president Mark Stern, who developed Battlestar Galactica, Helix, and Defiance at Syfy; IM Global Television CEO Stuart Ford; and the owners of Rebellion, Jason and Chris Kingsley, who along with Ford were also executive producers of the 2012 Dredd film.

"Not only is it a rich world with biting social commentary, but it's also fun as hell! As a fan of the comics and both films, it's a dream come true to be able to work with Jason and Chris in adapting this for television."

"Thanks to the legions of fans who have kept up pressure on social media, and a lot of background work and enthusiasm, we aim to make a big budget production that will satisfy both our vast comics audience and the even greater general screen-watching public."

Not casting Urban would be like sentencing this series, unless the actor himself for some reason declines or can't work it in his schedule.

I'm determined to preserve my anonymity on this site and the internet in general, so I won't say too much on this subject. But I will just mention that I've actually written for the 2000 AD comic. I am officially a 'script droid'. So this is one CB brand to which I have a personal connection.

I'm glad they're doing something with the franchise, and obviously it'd be nice if they could get Urban back in the title role. But I do wish someone would start making films or TV shows based on other 2000 AD properties. Dredd is only one of many series that have appeared in the comic during its 40 year history. A few other notable 2000 AD properties include:

And many, many more. With studios falling over themselves to adapt comic book IPs into films, there's an untapped wealth of material to be found in the British comic industry. It's about time someone capitalised upon that. But hopefully this time at least Dredd will get a decent innings.
