For me it'll be later than that.

Back in 1989 some movies were released around the globe much later than in USA, sometimes to match the south hemisphere summer.

That's why my 20 years of Batman 89 celebration will be in December 25th.

I cannot express how those 6 months of waiting were. Me, knowing it was all over the States but I had to wait from June to late December to see it. Plus there was no internet so I had to check newspapers with the hope of finding a little picture or piece of information about the movie.

I remember I went to see it with a friend of my school and we stayed and watched it 3 times in a row (you could do that back in the day).

Ha, me too! I didn't see the movie until Columbus Day weekend in October when it was in it's last run at theaters. We also stayed after the first showing because we showed up right in the middle of it.

I remember alot of people telling me that Batman still remains the film that they have seen the most in the theatre. You really can't say that about some of these summer blockbusters released in recent years. It truly was fantastic theatrical experience (from what I've heard) and look forward to seing it myself on the big screen. I hope I don't have to wait until the Museum of Modern Art exhibition of Burton' artwork.

Man, Batman 89 is the only movie which I simply cannot remember how many times I saw in a theater. Even one year after its release here, some tiny cheap theaters were showing it somehow and there I was, buying my ticket and enjoying the ride once again. And not once could I achieved some degree of weariness feeling about it.

True. I never tire of Burton's films. They have a very re-watchable quality. They're not too long, just a nicely paced two hours each.

Agreed, Burton's films are immensely re-watchable not only as superhero films but as great films in general. I never tire and I've actually never heard anybody say that they're tired of watching them.

Underrated classics of Fantasy Cinema.. Really underrated. I wouldn't even call them superhero movies, leave others with more colorful costumes and more self-indulgent poses to earn the "superhero" crown, Burton's Batmen were always pieces of the Fantastic, as much as living comic books true to Bob Kane/Bill Finger's concepts.

I have to say it. Batman 89 is STILL to this day, thee definitive movie Batman.
Sorry Nolan. Your Batman is cool, but there's something about the 89 that has the perfect kick.

I must have watched 89 way over 100 times in the last year alone. And I'm not kidding. I thought I was having a bat attack.

And I can still watch it today without feeling morose or stagnant. Its a great frikken film filled with iconic candies.

I'm a little sad that I wont be able to finish my 89 suit by the 23rd, but I will be rockin' it proudly at San Diego Comic Con in July and will definitely promote the 20 year anniversary. I plan to make small business cards with my Batman 89 myspace and email information, so that hopefully everyone i take pictures with can send me the photos so i can post them up!  :)

I will be watching the batman proudly on the 23rd as I take my day off from working the art desk.  :)

I'm actually taking the day off from work on the 23rd and will be online chatting with you guys as well as others while blasting away the Batman soundtrack by Danny Elfman. I will be watching Batman on Saturday 27th and believe me I'm going to enjoy the hell out of it. It never gets old. A true bonafide classic.

I was thinking about the 25th anniversary. We should definitely arrange something or at least bombard WB to re-release this film in sufficient theatres. I know by then we'll have another Batman film but there should be definitely something big for Batman's 25th.

You're spot on Batnar.  The first Tim Burton Batman film is completely unique, and as far as I'm concerned, the definitive Batman film.  Fine, Burton made a few alterations to the original story (i.e. The Joker killing Bruce's parents; Bruce not really being a playboy type), but stylistically, it captures the comic-book better than any of the other films.

Plus, it's one of those films I can watch again and again without getting bored.  There are so many reasons for this - Jack Nicholson, the wonderfully streamlined plot, the fun Prince music, Keaton's engaging performance, the beautiful Kim Basinger, the brilliant supporting cast especially Palance and Gough, and Burton's tight but highly imagnative direction.

I remember when I saw Batman on the SE dvd over a year ago, I forgot how unique it was, it was dark, thrilling and so poignant. Not many films you can say that you never get tired of watching and Batman is definitely one of them. And I agree that it is still the definitive Batman movie. Burton and Co. showed that you don't have to contemporize (if that's a word!) a comic character to suit a particular audience. You can make an engrossing, psychological film that still stays true to its source material and because they did that, that's why so many people around the world still love and respect this film.

One day to go... ;D

Post by: Grissom on Tue, 23 Jun 2009, 15:32
A BIG HAPPY 20th TO BATMAN!!!

Twenty years ago this classic film came out that touched the heart of millions and to be alive today to celebrate it's anniversary is great. I actually took the day off from work today and am presently blasting away the Batman soundtrack by Danny Elfman which I just got this past Friday (just in time  ;)). I haven't taken a vacation from work in four (4) years and was recently deciding that I have to take a day off and what better day than Batman's 20th Anniversary, today June 23rd, 2009. I can't tell you how much this film means to me and to come here and see folks who love it as much as I do makes me very content. I'm not alone in this and to be honest it wouldn't have mattered if I was the only one in the world who loves this film.

I wish you guys all the best today and I will be chatting on this forum throughout the day.

P.S. Already had my morning brew in my Batman mug and am currently my 100th percent silver Batman ring.  (yeah I know, I'm a geek!) ;D

Im sorry I can't but I'll be watching, believe me I will  love to, but I'm watching Batman this Saturday night and I'll come here and post my thoughts and any comments I have. But it's great that you guys are doing this, i've told a few of my friends and you might see some new faces commenting during the film.

I can't tell of many other films that has such devout fans, from collecting memorabilia, to creating their own bat-suits, batmobile and blogging the film live. You guys are great.

Thanks for such a wonderful site Ral, my favourite on the web, and remember "You're my number one...guy!!

I was having fun since I woke up this morning. Let's not let the celebrations end today. Remember it's the 20th year so for the rest of this year we should definitely have activities planned.

It was a great day. Wearing my silver batman ring, drinking out of my Batman mug and blasting the Danny Elfman soundtrack  and of course chatting with you guys. We should start planning for the years to come and also the 25th which is more of a milestone to some people. I think we need to plan petitions to Wb to re-release this film in enough theatres across the country to celebrate the 25th. We'll see how it goes.

Yep...a great day. ;D

So no Prince songs? Tsk. Tsk.  ;D

Planning for the 25th Anniversary already would be quite something, as it would indeed be interesting to see how many different ideas can be stirred up in 5 years time. Today, I can say I had alot of fun quoting the film to colleagues and such. Some got it, some didnt. But it didnt matter. Because as we all know....

It was twenty years ago today,
Tim Burton taught the world to play
He's been going in and out of style
But he's guaranteed to raise a smile
So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years
Batman!
It's Tim Burton's Batman
We hope you will enjoy the show
Tim Burton's Batman
Sit back and let the evening go
Tim Burton's Batman
Tim Burton's Batman
It's wonderful to watch it
It's certainly a thrill
You're such a lovely audience
We'd like to take you home with us
We'd love to take you home

Man, I can NOT believe that it was 20 years ago that I was sitting in a theater with my dad seeing this for the first time.  Where does the damn time go???

When I reflect about the 20 year anniversary of B A T M A N, I can't help but feel a bit nostalgic for the lost innoncence of childhood, like it's some kind of "Paradise Lost" (no wonder UK's Paradise Lost is my all-time favorite rock band, lol). If a comment like this feels a bit pretentious, those that are still 16, 20 or even 24 should wait till they get dangerously close to the 30 year old mark... :p

Among other things (i.e. a kick-ass fantasy film), Batman for me is a fragment of childhood and innocent times trapped in a crystal ball, a time machine which I sometimes need to touch  :)

Consider it a blessing, Mr. Gobbs. Because you know, just as I do ... the hype was nothing short of simply and utterly amazing.  ;)

We already knew something was special about BATMAN even before the film hit the theaters back in 1989. Actually seeing it, just confirmed what we already knew.  8)
