This is just like the Batman one. What are your top 5 scenes in returns? mine are:
5.When Penguin bites that guy on the nose.
4.Penguin taking over the Batmobile.
3.The scene when Penguin comes out of the water and tries to kill Batman and Batman turns around and they zoom in on his face only to see Penguin die all this with DE's music playing.
2.Selina's transformation into Catwomen.
and my all time fav.
1.When Batman rips off his cowl not only is it one of the best scenes in the movie but he looks killer in the Batsuit with no mask on one of my all time fav Batman images.
5. Bruce sitting in the chair and having the Bat Signal turn on.
4. The ending.
3. Bruce and Selina finding out who they are.
2. Selina turning into Catwoman.
1. Shreck's death/Penguin coming back.
I love Batman Returns. It's my favourite Burton film. I love basically everything about its poetic brilliance.
I can't rank scenes, so in no order:
The opening titles, Bruce brooding in darkness, Batmobile lighting up the fire breather, Penguin's death scene, Catwoman's birth - any scene with her for that matter, Rooftop fight, Catwoman's 'death' with Max, Penguin hijacking the batmobile, and Wayne playing pieces of Penguin's insults at his speech.
Though not a scene, I love the winter time period of the film and the frozen look of Gotham. It is magnified with Elfman's fantastic soundtrack.
It's hard to pick up individual scenes, I simply love this film's tone, a winter/christmas fairy tale.
I could mention the:
Opening titles (as mentioned)
Ending (as mentioned)
Batman & Catwoman's night-time fight on the rooftops. If the film had a higher rating, they could be almost erotic with them kissing, fondling and kicking each other at the same time. But it is great as it is.
Selina & Bruce at the party, with Siouxsie & the Banshees in the soundtrack. Everyone else is costumed, and the two of them are unmasked, because Bruce & Selina are the masks and Batman & Catwoman their real self :)
Penguin's final face to face with Batman and his death.
05- The bit with Penguin in the cemetary (before everyone starts talking)
04- Bruce and Selina in front of the fire place
03- Bruce investigating Penguin's background and then spying on him later
02- The face lick scene on the rooftop
01- The entire Bruce/Selina scene on the dance floor
I'm going to watch Returns again later today. I haven't seen it for a little while, so I'll add anything that sparks my interest afterwards here.
05-The Selina/Bruce fireplace scene.
04-Penguin shoots the fat-clown with his umbrella.
03-Selina makes her Catwoman outfit, the transformation into Catwoman.
02-Gotham turns on Batman.
01-Batman ripping off his mask, The Finale....My favorite scene.
I watched Returns again today. It works great as a whole film. I still favour this over Batman (1989), which is still a great film in its own right.
Each Batman movie has somthing great about them...Except B&R.
Alright, I'll finally try and rank my favorite scenes.
In truth, I need a top 20 best scenes thread for this film. There's a ton of moments I love. But -
00 - Opening titles (Probably doesn't count as a scene, but I love it)
01 - Bruce brooding
02 - Investigating Penguin's background and Batmobile spying
03 - Playing Penguin's insults from the Batcave
04 - Batmobile hijacked
05 - Arctic World finale
Like BR's predecessor, these are some tough choices, but here we go:
1) The finale at Artic World
2) Batman vs. the RTC Gang II
3) The Batmobile sabotage
4) Batman trying to rescue the Ice Princess, face lick, gliding w/ bats
5) Batman vs. RTC Gang I
5. the scene with bruce and selina right after the ice princess dies.
4. selina vs the rapist
3. meow BOOM!
2. life's a bitch, now so am i
1. the entire finale. max and selina. bruce and selina. max and bruce and selina. max and selina. bruce and the penguin. penguin and some sad penguins lol. sad bruce and alfred. bruce and a kitty. SELINA! lol
In no order, numbers used to keep track of top five...
1. Bruce in his study
2. The cemetary
3. Batman' first encounter with the Penguin, "things change"
4. The duckmobile rising through the floor of the party(esp. the music!)
5. The Penguin Army!!!!!
Both of Burton's films are hard to limit to just five, but these are usually the first things I think of from BR.
I really like the "No..it's a LOT!" scene. The Penguin is in a furious mood and will take nothing from nobody.

Ah, very true. Reminds me of how Darth Vader chokes out the Imperial officers who have failed one time too many in ESB (he's furious, & won't tolerate any failure from no one). 8)
My top 5:
1 - Batman vs the clown gang (one of the best Batman's fights in the movies :D)
2 - Bats & Catwoman first meet.
3 - Batmobile first chase (burning the devil clown :o)
4 - The Party scene ("I'm tired to using masks!" "Me too!")
5 - Can't decide between Bruce behind the Bat-signal and the Artic finale. Both are iconic. ;D
1. Bruce Wayne "bat signal" summons
2. Catwoman's ( Selena ) crazy laugh when Max's gun is out of bullets
3. Bruce and Selena "identity reveal" dance
4. Penguin party crash
5. Batman & Catwoman roof fight
Other one that I like: Bruce dressing up the Batsuit. It's just not better than B89's suit up scene.

I like how it contrasts Bruce's slick operation with Selina frantically getting ready in the car.

I'd tie them both.
Gotta love how Bruce just picks out the pieces of the batsuit as though they were his civilian clothing in Returns, followed by that badass shot of him exiting the room, decked out & ready to go! ;D
Agreed. Both moments are excellent.
I know it's a film, but in Returns, I wonder why Batman would suit up, walk out from the vault and stop, stand still and give a glare directly at the camera? ;D

It gives a great effect, & maybe he wanted to break through the fourth wall (if you know what I mean). :D
It's so damn hard to pick 5 favorite Returns moments, but I guess mine would probably be, in no particular order:
1) Penguin's finale with the zoom shot on unmasked Batman searching through the debris.
2) Penguin's speech about Gotham's first born while he hands out his lists to his goons. Right up to the part where he shoots one of his clowns and kicks him into the water.
3) The sabotaged Batmobile cruising around causing destruction with Penguin at the helm.
4) Batman giving a smirk before knocking the big clown down the hole with the bomb strapped to him.
5) For sure my favorite of all the scenes, the first shot of Keaton brooding in his giant chair, waiting for the signal to come on.
A lot of people here like the unmasked Batman spinning around to see the mortally wounded Penguin.
I agree with you all, it's moving and heroic at the same time. As great as Burton's camera work is, I don't think it would have the same effect without Elfman's music there. They just compliment each other. :)
Love how the Penguin picks out the cute umbrella by accident! :D ;D

Yep.
The Penguin's death used to bother me, now it doesn't. It was highly unlikely DeVito was going to return anyway, so just end his arc there cleanly. Loose ends are tied off. The death also compliments his life, tragic upbringing and tragic death. And as Burton says as a horror fan, the death of the monster is a main segment of the film. And I agree.
Yeah, even if I don't like so much the Penguin's "funeral", I think is really a deep scene played great by DeVito, and ends clearly the tragic story of Burton's Penguin.
My top 5 BR scenes go something like this:
1. Keaton's Bruce Wayne brooding at Wayne Manor, and his dramatic stance while staring at the Batsignal (this is usually the first thing that pops in my head whenever I think of Batman Returns).
2. The birth of Catwoman. Cats biting her fingers, eyes fluttering, good stuff.
3. Bruce and Selina's "Face to Face" identity reveal dance.
4. Any and all scenes with the Penguin getting excited about women ("I'd like to fill her void!", the girl with the dirty blonde hair, Catwoman), and the scene where Max entices Penguin with raw fish. Simply hilarious.
5. The entire "Good will towards men ... and women." ending scene with the eventual appearance of the Batsignal, and the reveal of Catwoman. Elfman's score really brought this one home.

LOL, it's the same with me (& it also comes up when I'm thinking about Batman in general). Love the music in that scene, as well. LOVE IT! ;D

"Burn, baby, burn!" :D
It's not everyday you hear stories about a Penguin man with a sex craze!

What do you expect after being in the sewer most of your life? The guy's been supressing himself big time. ;D

My thoughts exactly (or what about the woman with the feather headdress). :D ;)

Yeah, there was her too. I mean, it would
appear as if he might have had
some options before making himself known to Gotham .. and in his position you really can't afford to be too choosy. However, maybe there just wasnt much interest in sex living in the sewers (perfectly understandable), which is why Penguin began getting more frisky during his alliance with Max?
Cause we already know some of the Gotham girls didnt find Penguin too repulsive .. hell he was basically groping the chick with the dirty blonde hair after announcing his candidacy for Mayor! :D

Hmmm, I wonder why she would let him grope her, though (he's one lucky perv BTW). :D Either she loved Oswald, or had hopes of marrying him someday, just for the sake of getting benefits from him.
The only reason why Oswald suddenly became a 'Sex God' (:-X) in the minds of Gotham's more impressionable females was because he had apparently saved the mayor's baby, and was hence "the coolest role model a young person could have".
A lot of the young women volunteering at the 'Oswald for Mayor' rally looked pretty well-heeled (Burton even describes them as 'Young Republicans' on the dvd commentary) so I doubt they were just interested in his supposed benefits.
Maybe they also wanted to experience his French Flipper Trick! :D ;D
5. "It's not mine." (BOOM!)
4. "I think he knows who his parents are. There's something else."
3. "Burn baby, burn!" through "Meow"
2. "Sounds familiar. Appetite for destruction? Contempt for the Tzars of fashion?"
1. Selina/Catwoman transformation - Played like a silent film, melodramatic strings, gloriously over the top. You can see the moment she snaps in Pfeiffer's face. Classic.

4. "I think he knows who his parents are. There's something else."
Good memorie man, I love this scene too! ;D
1. The opening titles - the music is like from Phantom of the Opera, Gothic and chilling, and the imagery of the black whatever-that-was that Penguin was encased with going through the sewers was brilliant. Penguin;s first cry creeped me out the first time I've heard it
2. Batman spying on Penguin, cruising the snowy streets at night. Theres just something about that scene I really love
3. Batman's first intervention
4. Selina's transformation
5. Penguin's "funeral"
1. Batman's entrance, from him seeing the signal, to him seeing Selina
2. Batman Vs. The Circus
3. The end battle, well, from Batman flying down till Cobblepot dying
4. The very end, with Bruce finding the cat, and then Catwomen lifting her head
5. Batmoble spying on Penguin
All I know is that the greatest Batman scene of all time, and likely ever, is Keaton sitting and waiting in the dark, and then seeing the Bat signal and taking a step towards it. That visual literally defines the character of Batman for me.
2. Penguin's finale, along with the music.
3. Unmasked Batman scene
4. Selina's transformation
5. Bruce and Selina's unique date night at Wayne Manor.
Selina's transformation
Catwoman "saving" the woman in the alley
Selina's first "murder"
Destruction of Shreck's store/the Catwoman/Batman fight
Opening scene
I'm in the midst of watching BR right now ( in anticipation of the 2CD set ;D), And one of the scenes that always sticks with me is Batman pulling the Organ Grinder out of the circus train, from the shadow on the building to the fact that you don't SEE what Batman does to the Grinder. To top it off though, the monkey's unscripted and dead-pan reaction to the scene is hilarious IMO. That monkey should have won an Oscar!
^ I like how Batman raises his cape, like at the beginning of B89.
It?s obviously his way of psyching out his prey, drawing on the animal aspect of his myth.
1. Opening Scene & Titles
2. Penguin's introduction to Shreck
3. Selina's Transformation
4. Penguin rallying his penguin troops
5. Penguin's Death - Film finale (I consider it one big scene even though it isn't)
