Take a look at this crap collectible. I mean great idea to release the jacket as worn by the original Joker Goons of Jack Nicholson but this one bizarrely has Heather Ledger's face and playing cards in place of the original Joker comic logo:

No doubt put together by a disgruntled fan? lol It just looks stupid. The 1989 goons wore 1989 clothes! This really couldn't and shouldn't fit in with anything to do with The Dark Knight.
I only buy screen accurate stuff myself. This is just needless and worthless garbage. Avoid.
Actually there is a story behind this. I can't remember who was involved but the idea was for it to be a genuine replica of the B89 jackets.
However, WB would only grant a licence for it if they used Ledger Joker and cards.
True story.

i would almost wear a joker jacket if it was like they actually were in the 89 movie. i look good in purple. lol.
seriously though it sucks that wb ignores jack's joker because people are gaga over the dark knight and heath's portrayal of the joker and a lot of that is just because he died. sorry if that is harsh but sh*t. i'm so over everyone acting like heath was the start all and end all of everything like those dumbf***s who wanted the joker RETIRED after heath died. ugh.
ok i'm done ranting lol.

That sounds absolutely bloody ridiculous lol To me that would be like sticking Cesar Romero on this jacket back in 89 for people who only wanted the tv show and were against Michael Keaton (and boys and girls, that did happen at the time). But my point is it never happened then! And therefore it shouldn't happen now either! Different fanbases were respected in equal measure. A potentially great collectible ruined by PR department.
I really cannot wait until the next iteration of Batman movies to start to utterly annihilate the Chris Nolan era, for better or even for worser frankly. Their getting far too powerful for their own good. I really don't like this snooty attitude they have of seperating themselves from previous era's. It's getting on my nerves a lot. What's ironic is I once loved the Bale movies but that was a more sensible time in 2005 when people were just happy to have the movies back. Now it's needless fan warfare on a scale I've never experienced anywhere before and a waste of mind and body power frankly. Have people forgotten all forms of Batman can still be fun?
The more the new production team piss off the fans (more often the new ones who came on board purely for Nolan) with hair brained decisions like casting Ben Affleck and bringing back Robin, the more I know their doing a fantastic job destroying Nolan's legacy and pleasing us long standing boys lol
I actually think there's a limitation on Jack's Joker merchandise because of the licensing fees associated with his likeness as the character.
I postulate that his contract allowed Warners to use his likeness as The Joker without paying extra for a limited time (a few years probably) for the purposes of merchandising the movie in an advertising context. For a a few years after any movie (until the next sequel, anyhow), you wanna keep the previous film in the public's mind to some degree. Hence why the Kenner '89 figures in '90 and '91 had art of Jack's Joker on the card.
But now? That option probably expired, and outside of advertising the movie with its own footage, if you want to use Jack as Joker, ya gotta pay. And only Hot Toys so far has ponied up the cash.
The logo that would have been used, were it to be a 89 replica, would not have been Jack's likeness. It would have been the joker logo seen on the goons jackets.

Well, true. That image was more of a generic comic book Joker, but this thread just made me think about that issue is all
i get why jack wants to be a pain in the ass about giving permission for his likeness but surely he realizes how popular his joker was and is and that even if he didn't make a fortune off giving the permission, he'd still make a very pretty penny from all the stuff that is sold.
Just remembering. The way i hear it was that whatever dept in WB was granting the licence said nobody wanted the old stuff...it had to be the new Joker. Nothing to do with Jack's permission.

Irrelevant but somehow related. Everyone has seen the photoshopped version on the left which was a popular meme some years ago. The real is on the right, and is in fact a Joker still from B'89 (note Jack Torrance underneath).
One constant is the annoyed/tired/frustrated expression on Jack's face, he doesn't look happy while being offered this pic to sign. Antipathy towards his past role, or just a bad day...?

Maybe the guy said something rude? Maybe Jack was in the middle of making another face when the picture snapped (like when you're blinking in a picture)?
There's no way to gauge the context in the photo. It was just a photo that (like anything) can imply something, but you really can't prove any context for it. Papparazzi say stupid things to celebrities all the time, I'm sure many have photos of them snapped with that kind of expression.
i read that he liked being the joker and liked his performance. he doesn't seem like a very nice man though so i doubt he would be eager to sign any kind of autograph though lol
Like Doc says, hard to judge based on a photo snap. He has a wicked sense of humor...maybe being playful?
However, it looks like a paparazzi or autograph hound asking him...I'm sure celebs are sick of those guys.
I have no doubt that if a fan went up and asked for autograph and told him how much they loved his Joker - Jack would be cool.
it looks like he's saying "can't you see i'm smoking here?" or maybe he's offering to sign it with his ciggy lol.
is jack left handed or right handed?

I wonder how big the logo is on the jacket compared to the patch? If money weren't an object, I'd buy one just to plaster the patch over Ledger. :)
As for Jack- I have always heard that he LOVED playing Joker... In fact, I remember a rumor going around that it was one of the films he plays when he has folks at his house. How cool would that be?!? Watching Batman with Jack...
And yeah- WB seems to have zero interest in doing anything with Burton's Batman; It is all about the Nolan films. That, to me, is really sad. As far as the films go, Burton's Batman is easily the more merchandise friendly, appealing to all ages instead of skewing more towards the older teen/ adult fan. Heck- Just look at the merchandising bonanza that was '89 Batman versus all 3 Nolan films put together! It seems like a no-brainer...

all four of the original franchise were like that though. everywhere you turned there was batman here, there, everywhere. and the villains too. i'm too young to remember 89 but for returns, forever, and b&r i could walk in walmart and see all kinds of stuff, not just the toys. plus the restaruant tie ins mcdonalds and then taco bell did. that's part of what made it so much fun. i miss that sooooooooooooooo much. :(

Indeed they were. Great it was too but sadly it's also what led to the franchise' downfall. That was Warners mistake though. I don't blame Joel Schumacher at all.
I remember when Batman Begins was released there was all this bore talk about "their not having plush Scarecrow dolls this time or lunchboxes with Batmobiles on them". It sounded like a real killjoy when I was just about to prime myself up for a new collectible blitz. It was utter nonsense of course. How the heck can you not merchandise Batman anything? Fortunately it did have some new goodies. Trouble is let's face it the stuff we all had when we were kids was way more cooler than today. That's not nostalgia talk it's common sense. Have you all seen how small action figures are becoming these days? Compare them to the many imaginative and quality lines Kenner turned out through the 90's for the movies, comics and animation. Collectibility exploded.
The Bale era has ended now. When the new movies start Warners will turn their attention to those. Nolan fans are in for a shock lol I accepted the Bale pictures despite my initial disappointment of them ignoring the past. It was still Batman and didn't matter. Now it's Nolanites turn to "dance with the devil" and see if their loyalty is for real or fabricated as we all suspect. Just pray the new production team restore the "comic" back into "comic book movie" and reduce the "realism". Not eliminate it! Just reduce it. The Batman films are becoming increasingly dull to me in their design and they need to kick ass again.

To some, the absolute favourite Batman "movies" of recent years were the Arkham games and/or The Dark Knight Returns. It's as if the Hollywood movies serve as the catalyst for the release of Batman products that have much less appeal to the mainstream public, but are of high quality and are arguably much more satisfying to a hardcore fan. Back in the late 90s there were those saying that Mask of the Phantasm was the best Batman movie, by far. It's the same thing really. The success of the movies paves the way for other things.
So has anyone discovered the base jacket used on the originals? Were they customs made by the costume department? The UD replicas are SUPER NICE, but they just aren't doing it for me.
On a similar note, the playing card patches on the sleeves seems to show some sort of rank in Mr. J's organization. Bob's jacket has five cards, and I've seen other jackets with ranks down to one card. Cool little detail!

Notice that the image of The Joker on the cards is from the back cover of The Killing Joke.
All right, I'll be the one say it out loud: HOLY CRAP A PIECE BOLLAND ART APPEARS IN THE FILM IN SMALL BUT AWESOME WAY!!!!
And the ranking system on the jackets... WOW
Blu-ray screencaps of every goon's rank please!
For the 25th anniversary all of the main surviving goon actors need to be reunited in their jackets, somehow some way. And a decent interview with each. And I don't care if Clive Curtis doesn't remember beating up Batman, what's his favorite flavor of ice cream? Let's just watch the movie with him and talk about how cool it was to see himself punch Batman in the face.

And who played the awesome screaming goon with scimitars? It's time to hire a private investigator.
