I always found it interesting how they crop 16:9 to make it 4:3. Often they have to expose more of the top and bottom of this video and sometimes you can see boom mikes and such. Anyway..I stitched some screen captures from movies I have on DVD and VHS to see what exactly is cut and by how much. Here's what I did.

gosh, there really is something to be said for 4:3 then!
Excellent work. I always wanted to combine the two versions to create one whole picture, but I don't think the full screen version is always stabilized in one position. That's the reason I kept my bare-bones DVD.
Intersting you guys brought up this topic, I remember years ago watching a small part of Batman '89 on scifi, in widescreen. They called it GBX widescreen and it looked very much like 16:9 aspect ratio. And there didn't seem to stretch it or really cut off the sides etc., I'm still wondering how they did that.
Aspect ratios, pfft. There is only one true deciding factor.
