All news and opinion here about the new release due in the fall.
What surprises me is that these two great films still had soundtracks or music that were not included upon their initial release. Anyway looking forward to owning the new Batman '89 revised soundtrack and the Returns one when it's released.
Cheers! ;)
I wonder if we will see cues combined like on the B89 re-release. Like say, Birth of a Penguin and Birth of a Penguin II - Main Title being joined together. Or Selina Tranforms I and Selina Transforms II becoming just Selina Transforms. I wouldn't mind it, to be honest.
My gripe with the OST CD is the volume - it's far too low, so the first thing I'm excited about is the improved sound quality we'll get. Also, the film version of "Lair".
Also, the film version of End Credits is different to the album (I prefer the album version, though). Taking into account that the existing OST is almost 70 minutes long (and CDs have a capacity for 80), there isn't much room for alternate takes, if it's 2-CDs.
Why was Lair I different for the album release, anyway?
CarterOfMars, are the track titles going to be different for existing cues?
Different editions of the OST have had different titles we've discovered in our research. It's fascinating. Until the other day I didn't know there was a track on the CD called "Selina's Electrocution" but apparently it's there on some editions. We have the titles from the cue sheets but I'm sure we'll address all of these things somehow.
We're still hammering out the details of what to include on this, but it's coming along very nicely and I'm very happy with what we have and how it's all coming together.
Oooo Can't wait.

It's not uncommon for alternate takes or alternate compositions to be used on albums. There are several instances of this on Batman Returns, The Lair might just be the most obvious. In Ubeda, Spain last month there was a soundtrack conference and another alternate version of this cue was debuted there at the La-La Land Records panel.

Yeah, that will be an issue I think. Hopefully they can fit everything on.
I received a copy of the que sheet (dated 92) recently and although it contains Publisher ownership and track times I have listed the track titles.
I am not sure if this is news to anyone or considered rare but I have been asked not to share the scanned document on the site...hence the post here. I would like to add that it was not supplied by La-La Land Records or anyone on their behalf.

A SHADOW OF DOUBT
This track title appeared in the re-recording by Joel McNeely and the Scottish National Orchestra for the "Batman Trilogy" album that came out in '96. Back then, I thought it was made up by Varese Sarabande :)
I've always thought the Oswald's final moments should be called "Death of a Penguin" to bookend the first cue.
Is that cue sheet ral posted news to you, CarterOfMars?
Are those the track titles you will be using?
The cue sheet was not a surprise as I've seen it posted elsewhere before this.
It would have been nice to surprise people, but you can't have it all I guess.
Whats on the cue sheet is going to be on the release?
Yeah, I am quite curious to know what the bonus cues will consist of.

:-\ Sorry about that!
Not your fault. It was out there at another board just after I started working on it, so who knows how long it's been circulating on the internet.
It looks like this will be coming out October 19.
Did you get that date from the Wiki page?

Yes, and several music forums seem to be saying the same thing.
Cool. There should be an announcement soon then I would think.
I hope there's an announcement soon, I can't wait.
That's not the date.
There is no date yet, but probably some time in November.
I was told by the people from La-La Land at the booth for ComicCon that Returns comes out in December for Christmas.
That could have been me :)
I can't wait for the Batman Returns OST!
A quick, off-topic question to CarterOfMars:
Are there any plans for a Batman: The Animated Series- Volume 2 OST?
I read that the score was delayed due to art work authorisation or something?
Any truth to that?
Everything is on schedule.

Excellent.
I feel as if this is the last big thing left for the Burton Batman fan. I can't wait for that hole to be finally filled. And I bet the Penguin can't wait for that, either.
Update:
QuoteBatman Returns - as you can expect Mr Elfman and company were very busy with that massive box set coming out at X-Mas and it kinda put a damper on our entire BR release schedule. However, all is good in Gotham now and we might see the caped crusader and his rogue's gallery on our La La Land shelf in the coming months
Coming months? So probably won't be released sometime early next year.
"we might see..."
Pity, I was really looking forward to having this for Christmas.

I'm just going on what ral said, but by the end of the year it should be out. I'm thinking like you, though. Should isn't good enough for me.
If it's not in writing or confirmed, I'm sceptical. I'm not the trusting type and can see the wait time expanding and the words of potential becoming just that.
Hopefully it's out but February the latest.

Why was Star Trek IV skipped over?
Probably the same reason Alien3 was skipped over.
Getting Star Trek albums re-issued isn't as easy as "let's put them out chronologically". Different scores were put out on different labels originally. La-La Land has a deal in place with Sony who now owns the rights to the Trek V score. That's how this came about.
Trek IV was put out originally on MCA Records, as was Star Trek VI (and Alien 3 now that I think about it). Perhaps someday we'll get them. I'd love to have them in my collection.
In the meantime, I'm very happy with the total package on Batman Returns and I'm sure you will be, too. I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on this.
Only way you'd get me to buy Star Trek V's score is if it had Shatner, Nimoy & Kelley singing Row Your Boat.
I think it does have Row, row, row your boat. The score for Trek V is the best part about the film IMO.

I had a feeling that was the case but, not having an insiders knowledge, wasn't entirely sure.
As far as the BR release, I'm chomping at the bit for quite a few of the cues not on the original release like the first Bat-attack, Penguin saving the mayor's child, the cross-cut costume montage, and especially the party-crashing!
I can't wait to get this.
Going to say this again. I hope Forever and B&R happens as well.
Since I do have the old Forever score and no B&R one, having a B&R one is on my mind more. I would like to have all 4 Burton/Shumacher Batman completed scores.

I bought B89's complete score. And I will purchase BR's release as soon as the site updates. I want to physically hold onto the definitve sound of the character. Every Burton Batman fan should want to. Owning the Goldenthal scores just isn't the same high priority for me. I don't really go out of my way for the Schumacher era, that's all.

Put me down as another one wanting the scores to Forever and B&R. And while we're at it, I'd love to have Subzero and Mystery of the Batwoman as well. One would hope that the issues preventing more releases of the television soundtracks don't extend to the animated movies.

PS LOVE the holiday theme lurking on the site. Getting me all glowy inside.
Got my copy.
Haven't listened to it because I've decided to save it for Christmas. Yes..a gift...I bought for myself. Pathetic I know.
Anyway I'll give you a short rundown of the case and etc. Front and back are same as the the regular release save for the new writing adorning the cd. EXPANDED ARCHIVAL COLLECTION, and the the track titles, etc.
Inside, the back of booklet has the photo of Batman shooting his grapple gun. Blue and white lettering announce the reissue guys (MV Gerhard among them, the Exec Producer)and their special thanks. (I'd like to thank MV Gerhard "MV", who answered my nagging emails with to the point courteous directness.)
The CD holder thing lifts right out of the case. The flip of the track listing panel is a group of rocket Penguins.
First page of the booklet features DARK KNIGHT REDUX by John Takis (haven't read it, what to save it for Christmas as well. Be weary my eyes!) Corresponding pic is Christopher Walken almost mirroring a devil as he whispers over the shoulder of our man, Keaton.
The rest of the album has small in depth looks at each track.
Catwoman gets a two page spread pic. hehe...a fitting for a pin up.
CD 1 features the snowy logo.
CD 2 features a wide shot of Bats standing near the bat-mobile.
Nice. Nothing pathetic about getting yourself a present for the holidays. It's one of the few times I like to treat myself.
MV Gerhard is not Matt Verboys.

Frankly, its a nightmare. I want them imported to my Ipod, stat!!!!
The Penguin has FINALLY crashed the party! ;D ;D ;D
I'm loving the liner notes as well!
Batman Returns is one of John Takis's favorite scores. He's been writing about film scores and writing liner notes for several years. When I told him I was starting this project he was very excited. When we needed a writer for the notes (Jeff Bond was busy writing the book for the upcoming Burton/Elfman set) the decision to get John to do this was a no-brainer.
He wrote a little about the experience at his blog found here (http://www.johntakis.com/2010/11/announcing-batman-returns.html).
Neil
That is very cool. it's also always nice to hear Batman Returns being raved about on other sites and blogs as well as here (which is a given already).
I'm loving this release, when I first looked at the running time on some of the cues, I was afraid certain moments might have been left out, but all of the ones I was anticipating are there! Huzzah! Bravo and thank you LaLa Land, MV ( the real one ;D), and CarterofMars!
Nothing should be missing from this release. :)

*Had to throw this in to appear friendly.
i feel like im in the tell tale heart.... the gift bag is throbbing under my impeccable christmas tree.
last night at 3 am I lay alone in the dark and listened to the cd. My thoughts and musings to come.
Suffice to say that the quality of the music let me into motifs I'd never heard, allowing me to absorb a newer point of view and even reconsider feelings about the characters.
You cracked! Look forward to reading your thoughts GK.
I love how Elfman breaks into Making Christmas during Shadow of Doom/ Clown Attack/ Introducing the Bat!
should have something something up tomorrow to surmise my thoughts. I'm easy to please. Expect nothing but hero worship.
Having finished with the CD (sans extras and alternates) I can tell you that that even with my laymen's ear, this re mastering was superior to 89s, If such a thing were possible. No slight hiss or anything, that I can tell. My Ipod naturally goes higher In volume than the average CD player and it sounds seamless to me. But, again, I warn, I've a commoners malleus.
Birth of a Penguin/Main title was so big this go round, that I had to lower the volume. It's big, Its more in that looming hallway with the pacing senior cobblepot than ever before.
Penguin Spies Is a track like Face?Off/Beddy Bye from 89, because Its a missing piece I think just about everyone has wanted because, like Beddy Bye (another long SOUGHT piece by yours truly; where Vicki spies Bruce upside down followed by the "get a load of me" scene) It contains a version of penguins theme that, yes, Is recognizable, but not quite like any other version you'll hear ever again. Danny's like that. Gives you a great little motif..and you never hear It again AND It doesn't make the regular album.
Right off of the bat (ha....ha), I must say I was most anxious to hear the extension of Shadow of Doom/Clown Attack/Introducing the Bat that now takes you all the way from the arrival of the giant present box (the cue used to announce It Is a personal fave, long grinding wheels of doom) to Batman eyeing SelIna then booking. I'm not ashamed to say that I had access to the sfx ridden bootleg of the score that's been floating around for years. It hardly did It justice. This release reminded me how the film's score, though dripping with psychological subtext, can still be sweeping and almost 89Ish In Its badassery when the Bat gets pissed, especially once the clowns jump on the hood of the car.
Good to see that the proper Intro and entrance Into the Zoo Is finally In place for Intro/the zoo/the lair. Really no surprises here though. The lair portion was one of the tracks that actually survived the jumbled abridging process on the reg edition from 92, on which It managed to be, I think, the best track that cd had to offer. Stiffer competition this time. You're still moved by Penguins plight and appalled by the underhanded malice and trickery all In just under 6 minutes of music. LOTS of underscore In this one that keeps picking at you like a mauled steak. It's great re mastered. You hear all the little maggots burroughing In the meat.
The first section of, of caught In the act always Intrigued me because It was so under stated and I couldn't hear It well In the old school bootleg due to the quality. It was one of the only cues where everything seems to be running smoothly and uneventful. No kidnappings, no dead princess, yet the cue has enough sizzle on It to draw you In. Now more than ever. The strings play great right as Max prepares to possum SelIna "Eh?! Eh?! hahaha...PUSH SMASH DEAD!"
Kitty Party/SelIna transforms was very Interesting. This Is where you'll start to notice that the drums that accompany SelInas wild side are so much more pronounced In this re mastering. With your eyes closed, In the dark, listening to the portion where the cats revive her Is amplified Inside your mind. I hear more Instruments, percussions. You'll defInitely find you have a better grasp of her character by the cds end.
Penguin's Grand Deed Is completely new and Introduced an Idea Into my head. It's seems that the percussive versions of his theme go almost religious, either In this case, as you would accompany music to a savior, or later In the cemetery or when he falls out of favor back Into his original Intentions, a funeral. Big agonizingly sad, and somehow akin to a christlike figure.
The list begins Is short but worth It. I loves me a proper Intro the batcave.
The cemetery actually encompasses Batman's drive by the hall of records and his silent suspicion. Though a part of the original album, something about It works better here. I could almost dare to say Its my favorite. You can hear the wheels In his head turning. And even In thought there Is a lonely despair that follows him where ever he goes. I spent a lot of time thinking about this one. And managed an epiphany. Burton's bat, though not as hands on In the detective work as Nolan's,Is very reminiscent to House MD. or that characters Inspiration, Sherlock Holmes. It's never about finding the clues, they're already right there In front of you. It's arranging them the right way so that It makes sense, and thus, in this case, vindicates your mistrust of human nature and Pengy's established Intentions of goodwill.
more to come.. kinda at work right now.
QuotePenguin's Grand Deed Is completely new and Introduced an Idea Into my head. It's seems that the percussive versions of his theme go almost religious, either In this case, as you would accompany music to a savior, or later In the cemetery or when he falls out of favor back Into his original Intentions, a funeral. Big agonizingly sad, and somehow akin to a christlike figure.
I think part of the reason for the "religious" setting of the themes is due to his self-presentation and internal view of himself as a martyr which masks his true intentions. When he is later turned on, the theme laments more than in these earlier cues, because his attempt at sympathy and "glory" has failed, similarly to anyone who squanders their fifteen minutes of fame and fade into obscurity.
This is one of the many reasons Elfman is a genius. He informs you of the psyche of the character in ways that the script might not necessarily delineate. His music seems to come directly from their minds and not just from a generic "he's the villain, he's the hero" approach. At the same time these themes are catchy hummable and infinitely memorable. I was playing the CD, while a friend of mine (yes I actually and surprisingly have friends!) was getting something from the kitchen, later in the evening the CD was off, and my friend couldn't get the Penguin theme out of his head, he was humming it most of the night!
This is the reason I am so sad that this was Elfman's last Batman score (at least so far, which is wishful thinking on my part I know). I wouldn't want him to just carbon copy these scores for Nolan's or even Schumacher's films, but I find it insulting that Elfman's Batman socres don't get ENOUGH of the recognition and respect they deserve. At least LaLa Land sees them for what they are; Modern Classics that stand the test of time. I could thank this label a thousand times and it still wouldn't be enough.
Now sadly, I don't have something to look forward to in quite the same capacity as I was in looking forward to these complete releases....
...But there are a few good runner-ups I can think of! ;D
Sounds good. I'm glad the sound quality is a deafening roar.
I suspect that once I listen to this thing, I?ll be overcome with inspiration and will write a review as well. One that will showcase my supreme skill and talent.

Great article, Dark Knight!
Fantastic! Puts my own jumbled, uneducated ramble on the matter to shame. Well done! I envy your prose, sir.
Your reviews made this fan even more excited.
Dark Knight, that's an excellent article.
I think I must have a bad disc. Disc two is ok, but disc one sounds awful. Pops and hisses galore and a weird rythmic pulsing on nearly ever track. Very disappointed at the moment, I can't even stand to listen to it right now it's so bad.
Try it in another CD player if you have one. I've played the finished master and the actual pressed disc and did not encounter any anomalies as you describe (neither has anyone else who bought this album). If not, contact LLL and I'm sure they'll be glad to offer you a replacement. Do it soon though as they'll be shutting down for the rest of the year starting on Friday, I think.
Neil
There are no anacondas or pythons on this release. Hiss is nowhere to be heard.
Something is going on. Rip the thing onto Itunes and see what you've really got on there.
That's what I've done, twice. Still the same, even at high quality import settings.
I'll get in touch with LLL and see if a replacement can be had.
When did yours arrive PJ? I'm still waiting for mine to arrive.
I got mine yesterday, originally I wanted to wait and open it on Christmas but, when I read PJ's comments regarding a possible defect. I had to listen to it and make sure that my copy was okay.
First, let me just say, Thank You La La Land for everything that you are doing with the expanded releases. You personally, have fullfilled this Batman fan's desire for a complete score release.
This isn't going to be a review because, The Dark Knight already covered that and may I say an excellent review it is.
I played Batman Returns on three different players. The first player was a VLC player on my computer, When played, I too heard hisses and a wierd rythmic pulsing that would occurr every so often at the beginning of each track on Disc One. However, when I used the second and third players (Windows Media Player/ Durabrand Player), The Discs played perfectly. There were no hisses or pulses and the sound was crystal clear. If there are any defects, it might have more to do with the player and not the disc.
As far as this release is concerned La La Land Records have personally outdone themselves and should be commended for their hard efforts in bringing us these 2 masterpieces by Danny Elfman in complete expanded archival format.
There is one track in particular that I would like to comment on and that is, The Zoo (alternate) on Disc 2. It reminded me of the scene in Beetlejuice, when the fly is flying through the model.
Ral, i'm still waiting on my copy mate, and I ordered mine the day of release.

Hold in there. Both of you. As frustrating as your wait is, if your shipping address is correct, it's only a matter of time. Hopefully you'll have it this week.
Recieved mine in the post today :-) but havent opened it yet!
Good stuff, due to the snow i haven't had any post since thursday...so hopefully it is sitting in a depot somewhere waiting for me :)
Another little observation. About the triumphant, rising horn type sound made during The Penguin?s speech, the ?Fall from Grace? track. It is my opinion that this sound makes a re-appearance in ?Final Confrontation?. It?s the same style sound, but drenched in dread and doom, as The Penguin?s lair is destroyed by the missiles. It?s his earlier hope coming undone. It?s always been there, even in the previous release, but the numerous other inclusions in that track made me think about it a bit more.
CD arrived today. I think I will leave it as a Christmas present to myself now at this point...it will probably take a few days for the CD to thaw out!
With all the hustle and bussle of Christmas over I finally got to sit down and give the CD a good listen.
My first impression is how "smooth" and rich the music sounds, quite remarkable.
So um, no instrumental version of Face to Face, huh? :'(
i'm waiting for mines to come in hopefully tomrrow

No. I don't think such a thing exists. And it's certainly not in the film.

No multi-track masters turned up for this project. Besides having to pay again to put the song on there, assuming you could even get the rights to re-mix their song, would be cost prohibitive.

I agree, the sound is great.
What do you think of the expanded content?
I always had the impression that the soundtrack was qwerky and frantic. The CD reveals some somber stuff.

Yeah, agreed. "The List Begins" is a perfect example of what Returns was going for, IMO. The transition to the Batcave cue. Restrained, less identifiable as The Batman Theme, and adding in more mysticism, especially with how it ends.
There is amazingly good balance. The Triangle Gang theme is absolutely unleashed at the beginning of track three. Totally zany, but demented. And after that light on its feet melody, it ends mysteriously and sadly ? the moment Batman stares and walks off. It walks a fine line but never really crosses it.
I?m glad this release unearths more of that carnival sound throughout the entire length of the score. Joining zany and poignant themes together, without breaking the tone, is quite a feat. But it works.
if i get it today i want about 10 mins to quietly take in that this is real i been waiting for this since i was 7 just like i did with the 1989 Batman expanded edition i got my batman returns from moviemusic because i didnt want to wait until jan 3 for lalaland to start shipping again

Funny, how I never realized the lyrics were in the background of that scene until just now.
Well, even if an instrumental version doesn't exist...it should exist.

Please don't. I worked hard on that album and don't appreciate having it given away. I'll go so far as to have YouTube delete your links. If you like these kinds of releases and want them to continue (and want nice people like me to afford the rent) you'll respect that giving these things away will inevitably kill the industry you seem to enjoy.
Thank you and have a happy new year.

I received my copy last week and gave it a good listening to and was extremely impressed. So glad I went ahead and bought it! 5/5 from this listener. I was a little confused by some of the tracks on the 2nd CD though. Were some of those tracks music that was written for them film in 91/92 and just not used, or were they made specifically for this special edition score? I haven't had a chance to read the booklet that came with the CDs, so maybe it's explained in there. Anyway, great stuff! Now to purchase the 'Batman' extended score...

Only three small bits of music were composed and not used in the film. They're all represented on the album and it's all explained in the liner notes.

Thanks you guys! I've had the cd(s) in my truck player since I received them and have immensly enjoyed. I have to watch it though because certain tracks cause me to put the pedal to the metal without even being aware of it.
It's amazing for me to think back to late 1992/early 93 when I first purchased the original Batman Returns soundtrack on cassette (back in the day) and was disappointed because I didn't hear all the tracks I wanted to hear, and now after almost 20 years I finally have them. What a trip.
And I have Batman Movie Online to thank for it because I would have probably never known the full score was available for release if not for this site and it's dedication to the Burton films in particular.

La-La Land Records Batman Returns re-release has been nominated in the Best Archival Release of an Existing Score category by The International Film Music Critics Association.
This is fantastic news - La-La Land deserve all the credit and recognition they receive for their work on Danny Elfman's scores.

Going to say this again. I hope Forever and B&R happens as well.
Indeed, I found it hard to separate the music from the film. I've since changed my mind. I agree, let's get them both released. I've been listening to the Forever soundtrack, and it is pretty good. Better than the BB/TDK stuff, personally. It has the comic roots at heart, and is something you can hum. Case in point, the main title theme. While not on the same level of Elfman, it genuinely captures the character and still manages to get you going. I wonder if we can get another petition going, ala the B89/BR days?
Yeah, they should release them. I have a soft spot for the music of
Batman Forever, I remember very well that the Goldenthal album was the second CD I ever purchased in my life, and the music, accompanied by the booklet photos & artwork, were my first real glimpse into the world of the film. I'm not a big fan of BF, the movie istelf left me with a "WTF" and I've bashed it in the past but, you know, Nostalgia is a strange beast. Here is a quote from my favourite review of this score
QuoteBATMAN FOREVER's complete score runs in excess of 130 minutes, with several sections omitted from the film. In condensing the mammoth work to 45 minutes for Atlantic's rather generous release (following the cost of the song compilation, they had originally tried to force Goldenthal into a 30-minute album), the composer retains most of the highlights of the score, and the album plays as a magnificent listening experience. The timid need not apply, since Goldenthal actually crafts FOREVER as a hilarious parody of traditional comic-book film scoring stipulations (witness the uproarious cue titles), underscoring not necessarily the actions on screen, but rather his OPINIONS of the actions. Since much of the film revolves around a laughable script and anachronistic, surreal set designs, Goldenthal's music retains a certain bizarre splendor whose purposefully over-the-top, satirical action cues and seemingly incongruous subtle commentaries on the dire state of summer blockbusters present a perverse, yet ingenious and compelling cinema of ironies.
