ok so since the batman returns scripts are all online and everyone's read them, what are some parts that didn't make the movie that you wish had been in it? try to keep it to the two scripts that most closely rememble the actual movie.
theres one line of dialogue by the penguin that should have been kept in it. its when he's ranting about batman escaping without losing an eyeball or bladder control, he talks about the success the night had been up to that point and says in part "i iced the princess" and "almost got married. killed the bitch." when a male character, especially one as grotesque as the penguin, kills two women moments apart with a gleeful manner, they should have had him addreess them in such a cruel cold fashion. would have made him even more wretched, if thats possible.
ok your turns.
PENGUIN
Came this close to a perfect
evening! Iced the princess. Blew
away Batman. Almost got married.
Killed the bitch. This close..!

Classic!
Great topic idea. One thing I wish they would have done was to have Nick, the mugger from the first movie, return as the mugger in Batman Returns, as it was depicted in the comic adaptation. That would have been a riot! Those scripts did have a lot of elements taken away that could have been... I'll think of some real good ones later.
In Sam Hamm's draft, after Batman glides off a building he lands at a busy intersection. That would've been pretty cool IMO as opposed to him landing safely in that empty street.
Also, instead of "...she makes a hell of a cup of coffee", there was:
Selina gloomily backs out the door to the calls of "Me
too", "Make mine a cappuccino" and "Do you have Decaf?"
SELINA
But uh...
MAX SHRECK
Selina. Go away. Do not fret,
gentlemen, if our meeting goes
well, I'll let you watch me spank
her. ;D

That would have been great. He could have been a re-occuring character in all of the Batman films, only to get smashed by either Batman or a villain each time.
Quotea re-occuring character
like that dog? ;D
What about this deleted sequence?
Selina saunters in, with coffee. Chip, seeing her, sits up ramrod-straight.
SELINA
Morning, Max. Bummer about the store. You insured?
MAX
I dawn well better be. In fact I want you to phone those goniffs over at Gotham Insurance and tell them -
SELINA
Actually I have to split. Take a "personal day." You don't mind? Max, you're the tops.
Max nods -- sure, sure -- then sips his coffee. And spits a live cockroach from his mouth!
Both Max and Chip GAG as it crawls across the table.
SELINA
Those darned exterminators. They swore the machine was ship-shape.
With that she turns, and saunters out.
Probably Selina's 'revenge' for the 'spank her' comment.
Paybacks are a bitch ;D
I wish they had filmed this part of the script, set during the Red Circus Triangle Gang's attack on Gotham Plaza:
Amid the chaos of whimpering victims and dropped shopping bags, a fleeing Ice Princess shoves an Elderly Woman to the ground.
I like the seemingly incongruous image of Gotham's beloved beauty queen pushing a little old lady to the ground in order to save herself. It also makes her own later death seem less tragic, and more like a form of poetic justice in keeping with the film's dark comedic tone (much like the deaths of the mean teens in Daniel Waters' first film, 'Heathers').
I, personally would have liked to have seen how the ending in the Park would have been like
Actually, you speak of two, can anyone summarise them for me, I haven't seen, only one, and tbh, it was long as f***, so I only read the last part :-X
oh believe me i skimmed. big time. lol.
Batman Returns is a case where the finished film turned out far better than the initial script IMO, so I don't have a lot from the early drafts that I miss, but there was a scene in one of Dan Waters' drafts where Bruce and Commissioner Gordon met in the street and began discussing the Red Circus crimes, and Bruce started to slip into "Batman" mode. That moment was really well-written and probably the best Gordon scene in any script from the first series.
Mm thats an interesting one.
I guess I would swap Roxy for Sue Osman.
But the women on eastenders are probably the best in soap.
Men wise, again they are all good currently. There isnt anyone that irritates me.

Agreed. Reading the draft script was a struggle. Batman's dialogue was greatly expanded, he's spouting off little quips, etc. Not to mention the absolutely terrible Robin 'grease monkey' garage thing where he repairs and drives the Batmobile. If that script was filmed, while most likely retaining beautiful visuals, the film would have been mixed at best.

what the fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck?
I didn't care much for the Sam Hamm script. "Mr. Boniface?"
I liked Waters' script before Strick got hold of it, but it was necessary--Waters' script would have ended up being a 4-hour movie, and was probably a little
too sympathetic to the villains. Would make a hell of a novel, though.
MAX (to Mayor)
Oh, of course. Mayor Cobblepot
was a joke I never intended in
telling the punchline to. It'll
just take a couple phone calls...
MAX (to Penguin)
People came to see you, because
you were a good show. Limited
Engagement. Did you really think
you'd become Mayor? A Freak?
Causing a recall election? Gosh,
I feel bad now. I misled
you...
PENGUIN
I'd never been to a Christmas
party before. It didn't have to
be like this. Then maybe it did.
Or, who could deny this exchange? Poor Penguin!
MAX
I liked the idea of a brother...
Did not quite work out,
did it? God, I remember the
first time I looked at you in
that playpen--those eyes, that
nose...I always wondered why Mom
and Dad waited a whole week before
throwing you down the sewer...
All along, all this time, you've
been just a poor little rich boy,
an incredibly hideous poor little
rich boy, who just wants to go
back to his Mummy, his Daddy,
and the legitimacy of his family name.
Did not quite work out, did it?
PENGUIN
It's cold in here...
if they'd left that in there, it would have been harder to hate him. i still would have, but it would have been harder. lol.
Which, I'm sure, is precisely why it was removed, and precisely why my tag says "The hopeful future Mrs. Cobblepot?" Though pity is nothing to base a relationship on, it shows Penguin's humanity, as much as he might hate having it, it's there.
Mr. Boniface was Penguin's original alias in his first comic appearance. His real name was revealed in an appearance in the Batman comic strip from the forties.
Another thing I would have liked to see is the original ending, with the light blinking on and off, would be cool to see
But then again, I would also have loved to have seen how Hamm's would have been

Actually, I agree with you.
My ideal Batman Returns ending would be the following.
Bruce notices Catwoman's shadow, gets the cat and Alfred drives him away. That stays the same. The camera still pans up, and the batsignal lights up, but Catwoman does not appear. I think the previous shadow scene was enough. That way, is Bruce just seeing things, or is Catwoman really out there? We are then never shown, and is left up to us. I like ambiguity.
The batsignal blinks on and off, and finally, with the rest of the City, blacks out - as we melt into the end credits. The ending as it stands is hollow, but this way, it would be more so.

It would have been cool, however I feel the ending they went with was the stronger of the two, I mean at this point it was still believed that Burton would be doing a third, and with some people not liking the death of Joker in 89 this atleast kept another character alive and active for a sequel
However, if it was up to me, my dream ending wouldn't be either, it would actually be what I believe was passed around for a period of time, and it was simple a car passing with it showing Dent, now Two-Face flipping a coin, would have been bad ass

By not showing Catwoman at the end looking at the batsignal, nothing is sacrificed. Catwoman's existence is hinted at, but it's not outright certain either. By just using the shadow, they still could have easily used Catwoman.

I suppose, I get where your coming from, but tbh this is a film that was supposed to be for kids, I know its not how the film actually panned out (even tho as a child of 2 or so I loved it) but yea, things need to be kinda obvious to make sure they atleast get whats going on

I don't agree and never will. A program called Lost was masterful at this type of thing, making things open to interpretation and having tons of mystery. Showing Catwoman's shadow is visual film making at its best. Seeing that is all we need to know. It speaks volumes and opens up more questions that prolong thought than it otherwise would have. I don't like dumbing things down just because "it's for kids" or stuff like that. Kids grow up you know, the film does not.

Oh God, I totally agree with you man, I hate things made dumber I mean I love films that make you think, American Psycho, Fight Club, two films I love so much, yet two films that require alot of thought, I'm not saying yours wouldn't have been great, hell every ending thast been discussed would have been awesome
I recall reading somewhere that adding Catwoman to the last scenes of the movie was a last-minute decision. Michelle Pfeiffer's contract was already fulfilled; that was a stunt double both casting the shadow and rising up against the Batsignal, which is why the camera doesn't show her face. There's ten cents' worth of trivia.
Ooh, another thing that would have been cool--having the final showdown on a half-busted rollercoaster rather than in the arctic pavilion! I'm sure the cinematography on something like that would have overshadowed even the best acting, but man! What Burton would have done with that, visually...gives me goosebumps.

I would have loved to see that too!
"I knew I'd have to kill you. It made me love you more." - Oswald to Selina as she floats away with the helicopter umbrella.
Recently discovered this line and f***ing loved it.
I must have been drunk when I made this thread title. Holy grammar Batman. Gave me a f***ing headache trying to figure it out.
I read some script that showed Selina trolling Max non-stop. That's the main reason she went back to work for him. In the finished movie, she comes back and that's a big dramatic moment but not much comes from it. You never see Max and Selina interact much after that even though they work in the same office.
But in this other script I read she was dropping roaches into his coffee and just basically messing with him as much as she could. And I liked the idea of Catwoman blowing up Max's department stores while Selina made his workaday life hell because she'd mess with him in big ways and small, possibly without getting any blame for it.
Yeah, that's in the novelisation too. Selina dripped blood into Max's coffee too, I think. I guess it's not really massive stuff missing from the movie. But it would've suited the twisted fun tone.
I remember reading that stuff too. I totally wanted to do it to my boss but he was too nice to me. lol.

Ah, maybe that was it! It was years ago when I read that.
My view is that anything that goes into the movie is a grand statement even if it's not a grand moment. If some office drone brings his boss coffee with a sneer, that says something.
But if some office drone hocks a big gloober into the coffee first and then brings it to his boss with a sneer, that says even more.
Showing Selina trolling Max like that would've added a more warped dimension to the movie. Burton is a big boy and can make movies himself but I really wish more of Daniel Waters and his seemingly demented sense of humor had been included.
i'd have loved if they incorporated the scripted ending shot with the final ending shot;
have the bat signal flicker as a sign that Max's death caused the city's power to short out before going solid once Catwoman's head appears. It would also be symbolic of how she completes Batman and gives him life.
