UK time
No Batman 89 chat on 5Live...... just about a sheep that was slaughtered.......
Am listening to it now. Don't let Richard Bacon call you pathetic!
The guy just called it 'dated' 'cos of the lighting. Fight your corner PJ!
Sorry , just listening to it. Lol them guys are a joke, no pun intended, did you hear what their favourite films are! One said Batman was dated - his favourite film came out in the 60's!
They said about the lighting? They obviously know nothing about film, as Batman is supposed to be dark! Idiots.
Star Wars is well dated..
To be fair, I am a massive fan of The Big Lebowski, and I rate The Apartment highly too. Still, I don't get Bacon's point about not wanting to watch his favourite film more than once because he could be watching something else instead. If something is your favourite film, why is watching that a waste of time?
Still, the guy who picked Snatch! ::) I could barely watch that once.
Well I would like to press him on why he believes Batman is dated????
Looking at most films from 1989 I think it has stood the test of time very well, but then again I am biast lol

They're talking about comedies because they are quotable, but what a lot of non-fans of Batman fail to take into account is that despite being an 'action film' the first Batman is massively quotable, as much as many great comedies.
Heresy! They are now suggesting that Begins is better than Batman '89.
Still at least they rate Kim Basinger! :)
To be honest I know that Batman is not everyones cup of tea. But ever since TDK everyone and their granny has became a Batman and Joker fan. Everyone has became an expert and has an opinion.
I prided myself for years that I was a Batman fan, a guilty pleasure of mine (as are the Jaws sequels). I didnt have to explain myself to no one - and still dont.
But bottom line is these bozo's are not film fans. They wouldnt understand film. They're the type of guys that quote The Godfather II as the best film every made, not knowing why, and quote 'I'm gonna make him an offer he cant refuse' which was said by Marlon Brando in the first film not realising it was not said in the second film and Brando isnt even in the sequel! It's about going with the crowd.
And I dispute TDK being a better film. We'll see how dated that one is in 20 years from now. Anyway rant over lol

It may have been a rant but I couldn't have put it better myself. I love TDK as well, but we'll see how it holds up in 20 years time...it will be impressive if it's still anywhere near as watchable as Burton's Batman films are today.
Also, good call on The Godfather films. Sure, they're good films, but it always amazes me how many people rate thiem as their favourite films of all time. They're not
that good. Besides, I personally rate Goodfelles as a better gangster film than either Godfather.
i just missed this. i will check out the repeat.

Ditto. From what the members are saying on this thread, the radio show just didn't
get it.
You should have consulted with me.
At least the guy gives credit to Elfman for the "fantastic soundtrack".

Yeah, well, that's the very least he can say. That score is the definitive sound for the character. That aspect of the film cannot be denied. And if it is, the person is just delusional and lacks taste.
Paul Wares?
To hell with thier critisism B89 is a great film it is dated but so is the Adventures of Robin Hood and i can watch that movie all day.
And some people get the impression we watch it all day everyday but for me its a thing i sometimes fall into, that is, the movie comes on terrestrial and satterlite channels all the time and if i happen to come across it i will watch it its that kind of movie.

The film is obviously dated in some aspects, but it still retains that timeless quality. The world of the film fits into any era.
Batman does indeed have that timeless quality and I don't say that about alot of films. B89 is an absolutely fantastic film with superb performances and an engrossing story. There will always be people who criticize it but there are many more who praise it. Alot of it comes down to the comparison with the Nolan films, almost everytime I read a somewhat negative review of Batman (there weren't many, but when I do), 98% of the time the reviewer refers to BB and TDK.
Batman '89 stands on its own, as a cinematic classic that have stood the test of time and always will.
And hey PJ, no matter who you meet that has a negative reaction to this film there are many, many others (not only on this board ;D) who love it. Thanks for representing Batman '89 fans!
CHEERS TO YOU!!!!! :D :D :D
Yep, good work PJ. Thanks for representing us fans of Batman '89. Perhaps people will eventually accept that there is a large number of us who really rate these movies.
just listened to it - great stuff PJ. i so disagree with their comment on lighting.
Did they say if it was too dark?
they said the lighting, when put up against movies like Hellboy 2, made it look dated.
probably the stupidest thing to say.

Agreed. The lighting in Batman (1989) is fine. It's one of the best aspects of the film, if you ask me.
Yeah, this comment about the lighting, combined with what he said about how "dated" Batman feels compared to the HD we're used to seeing these days, really sounded like coming from a guy that cares more about the recent advancements in film technology and not the "heart" of good movies. By such standards, Escape From New York feels dated compared to Gamer (2009) or Robocop is dated compared to Transformers, or Terminator 1 is dated compared to Terminator 4 (and this is not to put down Hellboy, I love Del Toro's work).
Someone should tell them guys Batman was supposed to be filmed that way - dark! Film Noir. What a cheek, not like it was Steven Spielberg saying it. What do they know about film?
To be honest them guys would prefer to watch overpaid pre-madonna footballers knock a ball about a field for 90 minutes, and pay for it! They are not film fans.
I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but I got the feeling they were taking the p1ss out of some of the people that took time out of their night to phone into their show. They may not understand multible viewings of a movie, but respect other peoples opinion, likes/ dislikes. If not then why do a story on it?
One of them said Star Wars was not dated! Yeah right. Its a lot more dated than Batman. He said the reason it wasnt was because of the sets, and they didnt use minitures. These guys really need to do their research before making bold statments like that. Batman had the biggest set ever made for a movie up to that point. The sets were amazing on Pinewood!! Also Star Wars revelutionised the way minatures where filmed and used in movies for over a decade!!! Didnt some of the guys that worked on Batman work on Star Wars?
This isnt an attack on star wars by the way, I like that film. I am just making a point about some of their comments. And just because a film is considered dated, doesnt make it a bad movie! Some of the best films/stories were made 20/30/40 years ago! King Kong was made 76 years ago and it is brilliant!!
I think Batman holds up really well, it doesnt relay on big special effects, yet as I have said-and what makes batman special to me is the sets, costumes, the dark aspect of the film, acting and music.
I think the point is none of the guys presenting the show are film fans, so their opinions regarding the quality of Batman hardly matter that much. I don't necessarily agree that they were making fun of the callers though. Certainly, they were respectful to PJ, as indeed they should be. They just didn't get why anyone would want to watch a film more than once (hence my first comment regarding them not being real film fans).
Like I said before, it was crystal clear in the cinema. It seems like it got darker when in came out on video.
The lighting and the play on shadows is just one of the aspects that Burton used to create the wonderful atmosphere of the film.
I thought I read somewhere that audiences complained the movie was too dark in theaters and so they lightened it up on the VHS?
Personally I think with each re-release of Batman on DVD/Blue-ray the film is being 'lightened', hence it is losing a lot of its gothic and noir impact.
