Title: The vhs/dvd covers of Batman Returns
Post by: THE BAT-MAN on Sat, 5 Sep 2009, 08:02
Would you like to have had the vhs/dvd covers of Batman Returns to be just the emblem covered in snow?  The cover of the cast featuring The Bat. The Cat, and The Penguin? Or the cardboard popout poster?  Personally, I prefer the emblem.  Why? because to me, not only is it iconic but, it makes a good pairing with the 1989 vhs/dvd cover.

Agreed. Actually the R2 DVD covers have the Batsymbols on the covers.

However I am considering buying the R1 DVD for the commentary, which it has the original artwork - the second picture down.

I actually like the R2 DVD cover art than what we got here in the states, but if there's no commentary included with the R2 DVD ... eh .. that's ok.

The Anthology on Blu-Ray has the R2 style DVD covers.

that is not the original artwork - it's been done recently. it is awesome quality. Who made it?

Also, it has a tag beneath the left wing. This symbol looks much better than the "Redux" symbol seen on the SE DVD cover.

I'm not sure who made it, I found it while doing an image search on google for the logo of Batman Returns.   However,  I was aware that it was not the original artwork since it had a special symbol under the left side of the Batwing.  If you are interested in seeing the location of where i got the image here is the link.

I'm of two minds, actually.  On the one hand, I seriously dig the snowy bat emblem.  Obviously it bookends the B89 poster and there is that to consider but the other thing is that it just plain looks cool.  Two very good reasons to use it.

On the other hand, the standard cover has a certain nostalgia to it.  Plus, I read some analysis of BR at some website or another where this lady breaks down some of the symbolism in the film, not least of which being that poster and how it relates to totem imagery in the film (impossibly tall skyscrapers, the bat signal reflectors being the tallest part of Wayne Manor, etc).

The third poster is not to my taste.  It's poorly composed, Batman has clearly been "flipped", the Penguin simply looks awkward, Catwoman is positioned flat out goofy, the penguins are too big and too prominent on the poster, etc.  There's simply nothing about it that I like.

I like the 3rd one.

I have a 3ft high 3d cardboard standee of it.

Love all the 3, but I'd go with the first one. Simple iconic. ;D

I think they are all good. The snowy bat emblem is solid and simple, and compliments the B89 poster.

Though for me, it simply has to be the second poster- the bat, the cat and the penguin faces lurking in the darkness. That oozes atmosphere. I remember seeing that VHS cover in video stores as a child and being mesmerised and absorbed by it. To me, that poster IS what Batman Returns is all about.

The totemic imagery in the second poster's always appealed to me. I just wish the SE DVD cover had kept the original font and not added in some obnoxious fog effect.

Agreed, the "faces" poster is iconic, I have a cinema display with the large dimension about 150 cm tall (too bad it reads "Batman Il Ritorno"

I love both this and the snowstorm logo.

I too, love all three posters.  The art on each of them is very nostalgic.  I don't know why? but, for some strange reason, the poster art of The Bat, The Cat, and The Penguin has always had mezmorizing effect on me.  I actually have a poster of it set up in my room.

So was the snowy batemblem just created for the trailer? Or was it originally placed at the start of the movie like in '89?

I smell a new thread... ;D

Are you implying there was a deleted scene or something? Or have you not seen Batman Returns?  :-\ I'm confused.

Not implying there was a deleted scene. Just always wondered if it was supposed to be at the start of the movie in some form. Most of the recent Batman films opened up with a version of the emblem.

Can't say for sure, as I'm only guessing, but I don't think so. It wouldn't really be in context at the very start, as it jumps right into a flashback sequence. The titles are saved up for the sewer journey, but even then no bat emblem is to be seen.

Yeah, I've always wondered about that too. I think the credits in Batman '89 came in late in the game, because only the title screen was to be shown after the rooftop confrontation (with a pan up to the moon).
